People here go ga-ga over the Defender, but then trash the Discovery when they have the same drive train. It has never made any sense to me. I get some is aesthetics. Just seems weird whenever there's a Discovery it's all about mechanical issues, oil leaks, etc, etc, and when it's a Defender it's gushing over not being able to afford one, even though for all intents and purposes everything under the bodywork is the same.\n\nI would like to see undercarriage photos, too, and in the crease on the rear seats where the door jamb meets the curve of the wheel well, a notorious spot for rust because it can pick up mud and gunk under there and it's hard to wash out.\n\nThe leather seat bottoms in this rip easily at the bolster. Those covers are nice, but I'd want to see under them just to be sure. \n\nIn 10,000+ miles of ownership of mine I've never had a problem other than replacing the 02 sensors and the front ABS sensors, both of which are now readily available, cheap, and easy to replace.\n\nNothing on them is mechanically difficult. The cooling system is the known weak point given that it's an aluminum engine. I'd ask about any headgasket repair.\n\nLooks like a great Discovery, well taken care of, and without rust should be north of $8,000. Few thousand of those miles have been done pulling a car trailer or my 12x6 cargo trailer. IT is equal measures sports and luxury car on the road compared to the Land Cruiser, it has (cold) A/C which the cruiser didn't come with, and it doesn't rust at the first sign of rain. I've never been stranded in it. The cruiser is universally loved so I never feel like I need to defend it, but I do defend the Disco all the time. Best thing, since the cruisers have such a stellar reputation, you can have a much better disco, like this one, for the money. My '98 D1 was my first Rover (my now ex-wife bought it new and chose it over a Exploder and IMO a good decision). It was very reliable during our 7-8 yrs of ownership. Only PITA issue was a recalcitrant water leak initially. Otherwise, my only complaint with it and an '04 G4 I later owned is the interior leg room, or lack thereof. Great cruisers, very capable of road and quite functional. It gave me roveritis and I haven't looked back, having since owned a 109, a D90, a LWB and a NAS 110. Been without a rover since a before a short-lived affair with a Pinz, and am always on the lookout for another. Current desire is an 80\".\r\n\r\nI've wheeled them all - stock and fairly heavily modded - and each had it's own personality and specific manners. This D1 would be an excellent rig for the newcomer to LRs or as a toy for the seasoned trail folk.
