After picking it up at a Citroen dealer on the outskirts of Paris, and getting a crash-course in how to drive it and the hydropneumatic suspension, it was a little sketchy driving on the P\u00e9riph\u00e9rique out of Paris but once I got on the autoroute it was great. \r\n\r\nThis was only the second time I drove a column shift, the first being my brother-in-law's '70s pickup with a 3-on-the-tree before I even had my license. Most importantly, it looks like a rust-free car with all of its structural integrity intact. That is the most important part. Mechanically, it also looks well taken care of.\n\nHaving done two of those, the mechanical pieces would not scare me. Especially not in the Bay Area where you have a few really good Citroen experts. The fear of the suspension is grossly overblown. They are rather simple and even a complete rebuild is not too difficult (Ask me how I know ...) for the right person.\n\nEnjoying one of those to the fullest, requires that they are set up just perfectly. Again, not too difficult compared to to other cars (And they made over a million of them). But once it is, the ride is incomparable to anything else. For some it might feel a bit detached, as the power steering has an idiosyncratic feel as distractions are almost all filtered out. That's why I prefer early ID's that do not have power steering on the hydraulic system. That suspension makes you glide over everything. You can drive this literally with one finger. And you can drive this very fast on the freeway and it will remain rock solid.\n\nI am a bigger fan of the series 1 cars for both, DS and ID. I like the simpler, open headlight look and less trim so much better. I also like the early ID as steering and brakes are not power assisted and hence the hydraulic system is a tad simpler (Though the more difficult LHS fluid cars). We drove an early one on the 2016 California Mille and the handling was nothing short of amazing. It is such a benign car to drive at the limit. It understeers and announces itself very politely when it wants to break out and slide just a little. And you easily catch it with a bit of reduced gas pedal input. On my list of most underrated cars and those that are currently finding an increased audience, the D-series is in the top 3. Europeans are starting to go bonkers for early cars and prices can reach absurd levels (Especially for MM eligible very early cars). Citroen ID/DS' rarely come up for sale in America; let alone in this condition with the European headlights, A/C, in Pallas trim, and without rust. From the revolutionary hydropneumatic suspension, which makes you feel like you're gliding above any road imperfections, to the ingenious rear view mirror and rear turn signal placement, freight train horn, and aerodynamically sculpted lines; it truly is an experience to pilot one down the road. My dad's DS has even been getting 25+ MPG while driving on our beautiful back roads. I'd be curious as to how many are still on the road because seeing only a couple for sale each month, I thought I would have to import one from Europe. My guess is that their numbers are only in the hundreds here, as they tend to rust and it's difficult to find competent mechanics to maintain them. As with many of Citroen's innovations, it was done very well from the start: A near perfect turbine blade design - very aerodynamic and very efficient - the lightest engine driven fan possible, without even metal threaded inserts in its hub - just specially-designed high helix angle threads that bite deep into the very tough nylon polymer, yet are basically shakeproof - as nylon is the material used in most self-locking nuts, introduced on aircraft fasteners during WWII, as Dupont (a 200+ yr old French co.) invented the material in 1938 - just in time to be useful in the war. That first ever plastic fan stayed on the DS from '55 to '75, then on with the 2CV and other Citroens. \r\nOnly sometime in the '70s did Detroit adopt plastic for engine-driven fans, and that was precipitated by the fatigue failure of several steel fans on one of the BIG 3 car co's, after a couple of mechanics were killed by flying steel blades broken off due to vibration. \r\nAlso, someone recently pointed out that the DS was the first true \"paddle-shifted\" car, altho owners of Citromatic cars just called it the magic wand. Flickable into gear with one finger with hands on the wheel, the Citromatic is a marvelous bit of innovation and very desirable in today's gawdawful traffic in the Bay area and most everywhere. Yet it gives the fuel economy of a manual box sans clutch. I used to be scared of it, having learned a bit about it on my father's 1958 DS19 Citromatic, but in spite of the extra hydraulics, it's a simple system, and as Dad used it to go flyfishing for German browns on the Madison river out of Ennis Mt from Salt Lake City in the '60s with no service anywhere - he always got home.
