For your 1st year of ownership the car was GUARANTEED to go from 0-100 and back down from 100-0 in under 20-seconds and it would do it at 18 seconds just like clockwork! Also, if you got in a serious front-end collision, the engine would get pushed on rails under the car, instead of coming through the firewall! I had the most expensive car from any employee of the dealership, including the owner and GM. The dealership was at the top of a hill that lead down to the old GM Frigidaire Plant and once a week at lunchtime, I would take a different employee for a WILD-RIDE down the hill at speeds well over 100mph! I used to love to open up the bonnet upon filling up at the local Sunoco or Shell gas station and SHOW off that magnificent 326 HEMI with 4 dual-throat Weber carbs. The steering wheel leather, and the leather all around the car retain their original color, and have no cracking that one would have expected with age. I'm genuinely amazed that none of the leather has aged this way, especially considering it hasn\u2019t been treated with leather conditioners (by myself or the previous two owners) as far as I'm aware. The original leather must have been of such high quality, put on with such detail and precision to not have in various areas, and likely conditioned when it left the factory to such a degree, to remain in such pristine condition all these years. Similarly, the paint has held up without fading which just seems would occur to some extent over 40+ years. \r\n\r\nThese cars were truly a labor of love for the skilled craftsmen who built them and from what I understand they were apprenticed. before doing their specialist work for their entire careers. \r\n\r\nFrom crafting the engines by hand by one craftsman, to shaping the body panels by hand from other craftmens, to sanding the body by hand, and applying multiple layers of paint by hand--allowing each layer to dry--then repeating again, and again, every detail was handled by craftsmen to create the best skilled craftsmen were capable of. \r\nBecause this is later model Vantage, you can also imagine that the work they did improved over time as they learned how to improve their work with this model specifically over time.\r\n\r\nHere's a fascinating video interview with Alan Curtis, the managing director of Aston Martin in the late 1970s, filmed inside the factory. It focuses on the Lagonda--not Aston's finest at the time it was being launched (the car was going in another direction with technology (not their specialty by any means)--but also gives glimpses of what looks like a Volante and details the production process from leather, to painting, to body work. \r\n\r\nThe video shows how only the finest leather was selected for these cars, and manually cut out for each part of the car. Every piece of leather was carefully inspected, hand-cut by skilled craftsmen, and any imperfect sections were discarded to ensure only the best material was used. Other workers hand-stitched each piece of leather for the car. Each craftsman had a specific task, whether it was cutting leather, sewing it by hand, or shaping and sanding the car\u2019s body. The paint was applied in multiple layers, allowed to harden, and then reapplied with the same meticulous attention. Even the engines were assembled by hand.\r\n\r\nThis is the only video I've ever found that documents this level of craftsmanship, which has largely disappeared.
