It depends on which end of their range they are.\n\nThe external oil cooler is a good thing if it's a quality unit and if the internal one was deleted. In the stock VW engine the oil cooler inside the fan shroud blocks air flow to the #3 cylinder and it's almost always the #3 exhaust valve that fails first. Consequently, it's wise to adjust that valve a bit looser than spec to alleviate some of the stress on it. Normally you'd only have a fuel filter back in the engine compartment, riding along somewhere above the carb. But when I buried the '73 in a snowbank at Stevens Pass one year trying to bulldoze my way out of the parking log (note to self: Things are not Suburbans) - after the tractor guy pulled me out of the snowbank, about 15 miles back down the road going home I stalled out. Turned out some dufus (not me) had put a second fuel filter UNDER the nose, on the hose coming from the gas tank, and because there was a little water in the gas, ice blocked it up. do NOT put a fuel filter there, regardless of weather!!! :) Leave it in back where the engine will keep it warm. You often see '73s with a swapped engine which includes the tin and cooling shroud from a beetle, with the air outlets on either side. '74 Type 181s had the expected heating system, which works as you'd expect; good for temps down into the low 40's. \n\nHaving daily-driven several Things through numerous New England winters, I can honestly say that a properly maintained BN4 heater will cook you out of the cabin in temperatures as low as 20 degrees. It's important to have a good top frame and as few holes in the floor as possible. I always found the defroster to be quite adequate, as well - provided there are no leaks in the ductwork. A BN4 that gets too hot will actually warp the ductwork, and cause leaks, often keeping the contents of the glovebox very warm. \n\nI learned about these heaters from my first VW Thing named Astro, which earned the nickname \"The Windchill Generator\" because it was always colder inside than out. Eventually, I figured out the nuances of the heating system and my second Thing (which was not impersonating Swiss cheese) was incredibly cozy inside. Be forewarned, though; improper setup can result in a fire. Combine this with a bad seal for the gas tank sending unit (vapors), cracked or missing vapor recovery system components, hardened fuel filler neck hose, and compromised seals on the heater itself.\n\nIt did have several fail-safe features, believe it or not, such as the trigger point for the fuel pump (located under the gas tank) being reliant on the spinning fan inside the heater. The slower the fan, the slower the pump. No fan, no pump. This ensured the burner wouldn't run without proper airflow to keep it from burning up. The whole thing was operated with a timed switch (take care of these switches - they are hard to find and expensive when you do). The other common problem is a bypassed / jumped fuse on the control module. It was there for a reason, and many just jump it to get things going.
