The crest has definitely not been there since 1987 because it looks to be almost new. I am also half Spanish and spent all of my summers in an apartment we had in Playa San Juan, Alicante. What a fantastic time in my life. I could rent a car with my American license at 16 when the minimum driving age there was 18. Plus, you could get into the discos at 16 and get served! And the women, so beautiful. I wound up meeting my wife there and living in Spain almost 20 years. My two boys didn\u2019t even speak English when we moved to the U.S. in 2013! Thank goodness the education they were receiving in Spain allowed for them to keep getting staight A\u2019s while they learned the language, (which took them about 90 days). Yes, you can tell this Santana hasn\u2019t been abused. It cold cranks right up without touching the gas pedal and idles nicely. When I recieved it, it was missing the front prop shaft. I ordered one and installed it, but still no traction up front, so I popped of the caps and found there were no half shafts. I ordered them and installed them, but the there was a clunk when I tested it, so then I realized why the prop shaft and half shafts were out. The front diff was shot. I ordered a brand new diff and reinstalled everything with new seals, bearings, etc. If anyone needs a diff, Camion Militar in Barcelona can get you a new old stock one delivered for around $500. Then I tackled the clutch, which was not letting me put it into gear with the engine on. This vehicle is listed as a 1987, which would have worn Santana's version of the Defender-style flat grille and nose. But this has the recessed Series III grille, which wasn't used by Land Rover OR Santana after late 1982. Also, this has the Series III 2.25L engine and 4-speed manual gearbox, not the 2.5L Defender engine and 5-speed which would have been used on a 1987 model year Santana.\n\nDoor panels and dash are straight late Santana Series III, at least from what I can see. The 1987 door panels and dashboard were different. This car was built somewhere around 1981 or 1982.\n\nI know Spanish paperwork lists the year of first registration, not necessarily the manufacture date, but if it was a Forestry vehicle or in other governmental use, it would have been first registered at least NEAR the manufacture date, not five or six years later. I buy, sell, restore, modify, own, drive and rally vintage cars here in Spain. Most of them are Land Rovers. A lot of them are Santanas. In the past five years at least sixty Santanas have passed through my hands. This type of year discrepancy is not at all common, and although there are legitimate causes for something like this, the reasons a late Series III is being advertised as a Santana Series IIIA needs to be explained. It makes a huge difference in this case. The engine is different. The gearbox is different. The body panels are different. Looking at the VIN plate, if this is the original VIN plate, then this example was built AFTER the official license with Land Rover ended in 1983. But then it shouldn't have this nose or this engine or this gearbox, and it has \"LAND-ROVER SANTANA\" badges on the rear, which were done away with after 1982. It's very strange. Does this vehicle have power steering? I'm starting to think this is a 1983 build year vehicle, not a 1982.\n\n@bri_ola, Santana built Land Rovers in Spain, under official license from England, from about 1958 to 1983. They were built using \"CKD's\" (Complete Knocked-down Kits) and tooling from Solihull and were, by and large, identical. The reasons for the Santana agreement are murky (Solihull-built trucks were sold in Portugal and France, mind you) but probably had a lot to do with the dictator Franco wanting to create Spanish industry. Similar to Seat's relationship with Fiat.\n\nAgain, having owned and restored and worked on more than sixty of them in the last five years, I can tell you that they are very much Land Rovers. From 1959 to 1975, essentially all of the parts in a Santana are identical to their English-built counterparts. But Land Rover, in the notoriously tight-fisted grip of British Leyland, wasn't investing in ANYTHING in the 1970's. Build quality was famously poor. Santana on the other hand was comparatively flush, and invested heavily in improved tooling and assembly techniques. They also innovated here and there, sometimes in small ways (stronger brake master cylinders in the late 1970's) and sometimes in big ways (it was Santana who designed and built the 5-speed transmission used in the early Defenders. Solihull actually licensed the gearbox BACK from Santana. It was Santana who introduced power steering on the Series IIA and Series III.) Yet still, although a few different parts appeared her and there in the late 1970's, they remained essentially identical to their Solihull counterparts right through the end of the official license agreement in 1983.\n\nIn 1983, the official licensing ended, and Land Rover introduced the coil-sprung Defender. Santana continued building what amounted to Defender lookalikes (now commonly referred to as the \"Series IIIA\"), but with the old leaf-spring chassis from the Series III. Solihull used the Santana 5-speed in the Defenders, and Santana used the Solihull 2.5 engine in their Series IIIA. I was sort of a period of detente. Although Land Rover technically started selling Defenders in Spain in 1985, they never pushed them here, and left the market to Santana all the way until around 1990.\n\nSantanas are OUTSTANDING vehicles. The 1959-1982's are the best. Essentially identical to their Solihull twins, but better screwed together and even tougher. After 1982 they were still good, but progressively started to fall behind the Defender and can be a little trickier to get parts for. A 1987, for example, which again, this truck is NOT, would use a confusing mix of Series III and early Defender mechanical parts, and a fair number of Santana-specific trim and body stuff. The VIN plate is from 1983 or later, but the badges on the rear are from 1977-1982. That's all. Badges are often replaced at various times over the course of a Land Rover's life, particularly if the rear doors are changed. We bought 2 santanas in 1986, fresh from the factory. They were identical to this one except for the single piece windshield and our diesels had a pull button to shut the engine off.
