I purchased the Lotus after experiencing quite a few Porsche models, searching for a 993 Turbo, and always desiring a Ferrari...but wasn\u2019t quite ready for the service costs. \u201cHow about an Esprit?\u201d I said to myself. Found one for sale, flew down to sunny Florida and then drove it home multiple hundreds of miles in 2 days, which were trouble free I might add. Well, trouble free mechanically. The check engine light came on about 30 miles into my journey home. Finicky gas cap. Never was able to fix it even after years of ownership, it just became one of those things. Yearly inspection for emissions involved driving 75 miles or so after clearing the light and praying to the Lotus gods it wouldn\u2019t come on while hooked up to the computer to pass and get that precious sticker. \r\n\r\nThroughout ownership various switches may wear out or need replacement. Some gaskets on the rear lid stopper. Sometimes my passenger window needed a little help to go all the way up. Took the door apart, undid some screws and replaced the motor. Good as new!\r\n\r\nIf you want to feel like a celebrity, get an Esprit. If you want to enjoy hours of delicious flat plane crankshaft exhaust tone, get an Esprit. If you don\u2019t mind occasional electrical hiccups and have the ability to complete some general troubleshooting and repairs, get an Esprit. If you are skilled at taking inclines at a 45 degree angle with the passenger tire approaching first, get an Esprit. \r\n\r\nI only ended up selling mine because the nearest dealership was 5 hours away which meant either shipping the car for service each time or driving myself in the Esprit amongst highway cars and 18 wheelers I could drive under...and a rental car back. Wait the 20ish+ days for service because there is definitely a line due to lack of technicians willing to work or knowledgeable of Esprit v8. Then drive back down in a rental to navigate the highway gauntlet home.\r\n\r\nI hope this Esprit goes to a loving home and enjoyed even half as much as I loved mine. \r\n\r\nWould I own an Esprit again? Absolutely. But maybe next time I should move to a warmer climate and be within half an hour to an hour of a dealership and knowledgeable technicians instead. Amazing car, now with 65k miles. For comparison, it is a far more comfortable ride than my Ferrari 355, although no where near as nice of a sound. I never feel as guilty throwing miles on the Lotus, as compared to the Ferrari. Remember, this engine was built to reliably handle 500hp, but was detuned due to concerns regarding the strength of the transmission. Fastforward to now, I used the lotus forums to source a custom gear set that resolves the weakness of the Renault gearbox and well known Lotus tuner in Germany to reprogram ECU, added low and high boost switches and you have a very fast, very reliable exotic that can be used a daily driver. Also, that horrible steering wheel can be easily removed and upgraded to any momo wheel, I don't trust older airbags. These things are so undervalued, exotic, and simply stop traffic. Great entry level exotic. \r\nAlso, regards to maintenance and repair, many of the parts are attainable, and they are pretty straightforward to maintain. With regards to question about tall people fitting into this car, the V8 has a lot more room than the earlier Esprits. By this time, Lotus made major changes to make more room in the cabin by lowering the floor, moving back the rear bulkhead, narrowing the center tunnel, and pushing back the pedals. With a completely stock V8, up to 6'2\" fits just fine. If you change out the steering wheel to an Elise wheel, that gives a lot more room between the seat and the steering wheel to get in and out easier and have more knee room for working the pedals. If you are too big to fit after all Lotus has done, and after changing the steering wheel, the seat is what needs to be changed. The seat takes up a ton of room. If you take the seat out (it's 4 bolts and it's out), and sit back in the car, what you will notice is acres of room, and the fact that without the seat, the tub itself is basically a fully functional seat with little padding. The seat belts are not tied to the seat, and the floor is nice and flat. Edd China could have easily taken out the seat and put down some foam pads and safely and comfortably driven that Esprit on Wheeler Dealers. So it's just a matter of fitting one of those \"shell\" type racing seats to make it possible for really tall drivers to own this car comfortably. Sourcing parts is easy, things like brake pressure accumulator and ECU are GM parts, got my accumulator on Amazon for $78. Besides the timing belt, the only other issue that should be addressed is the radiator plugging up with debris. Nice thing is there is very good model specific freeware laptop software that allows home tinkerers to access codes, monitor stuff, and reset codes. It is fully OBD compliant but there are several model specific codes used, which are well documented. I always bring my code reader along and reset as required. \r\n\r\nThey are noted for throwing codes and having difficulty setting the monitors for smog checks. Lotus USA has a reflash available (usually called the \u201cHi-Torque\u201d) that helps a lot, so budget about $800 for the upgrade if it is not already noted on the top of the ECU (located right side of engine bay under the black cover. The monitor setting drive cycle is a bit arcane but works. \r\n\r\nI would also budget for Cam belts based on age. It is done with the engine in, but really requires a lift, some special tools, and an experienced hand. Think ~$5K IIRC.\r\n\r\nTires are about $2K. Haven\u2019t looked in a while for availability, but typically there are a couple of brand options out there for matched sets.\r\n\r\nI use my car a lot, with several long trips to Lotus events. My last big one was to LOG in Birmingham AL, about 6,000 miles round trip. Similar distance to Asheville NC a few years ago. My home track is about three hours away, so every Track Day is a commute. Very comfortable road partner. Adding cruise control for about $800 is a highly recommended DIY project. We find trunk space adequate for two up touring with soft luggage, but pack judiciously. One has the air conditioner running pretty much all the time as the coolant and hot oil run through the tunnel; it keeps up fine but does not feel Ice cold. \r\n\r\nAgree it would be prudent to have a local independent shop in mind before getting an Esprit, or any vintage Lotus for that matter. Parts availability is pretty good from several suppliers, one primary supplier located in California. The excellent parts & service manuals are available on PDF. For sure provide a copy to your selected shop and load it on your iPad and phone.\r\n\r\nThere are two active online forums and one Yahoo technical forum. All three are great, with many common members. As is often said by Lotus fans, it is the cars that draw you in but it is the people that keep you coming back. I recognize a few user names in this thread. \r\n\r\nAt six feet I fit fine. I use the glass sunroof panel with my helmet. Pedal width is generous, although I select appropriate footwear for my wide feet. If you are trying a V8 for fit, check for a wedge shaped upholstered pad located under the seat cushion; removal provides additional head room. These are often separated from the car over time, just like the second set of keys, remote, alarm key, sun roof panel with padded storage envelope, tool box, etc. \r\n\r\nI find the performance more than adequate in stock form. Buckets of torque, great handling, well screwed together, reasonably quiet, etc. I also have upgraded the transaxle; mine needed attention when I bought it. The gap between third and second is larger than ideal, and it is difficult to double clutch down as it takes time to spool up revs; the reduced ratio gap and cat removal has solved this issue. Note this is really only relevant to the track; all good for road use in stock form.\r\n\r\nThis car looks like it has the Brembo front brake upgrade, which is a good thing. Given the way this car was driven/not driven, it's nice that is has low miles, but I am sure this car has many deferred maintenance items besides the cam belts. If the buyer wants to really drive it, you'll need to spend a lot of time replacing all the radiator hoses, the flexible brake lines, the tires, repack the front wheel bearings, change every single fluid, the AC will probably need a lot of attention because AC's don't do well with cars that sit, and whatever else pops up. Believe it or not the V8's are much easier to work on than the 4 cyl because Lotus designed and master planned the engine. Sitting on a shelf awaiting sale obviously does not put it under such stress. There are a bunch of Lotus/Esprit owners in your area. Joining Lotus Ltd and spending time on lotustalk.com is probably a strong start to getting connected with some of those nice people.\r\n\r\nI'm biased because I've taken my own V8 Esprit to him (driven the ~5 hours each way from Western NY), but Ralph at RS Motorsports in Closter, NJ comes highly recommended from anyone who pays attention. He often has quite a wait to get in, so I also recommend avoiding delay in calling him if you want a shop to do any work.\r\n\r\nI've been told belts can indeed be a DIY repair when armed with plenty of patience, time, and sufficient research. Plenty of folks are also going *slightly* wider for more tire options- Michelin Pilot Sports specifically, I think.\r\n\r\nJAE out of California is a great source for parts for our cars. IIRC, the \"blue\" cam belts are ~$50 2x + pulleys and such. You can't go wrong with Pilot SS's but price is quite the step up.\r\n\r\nAs far as belts, I had Gator Motorsports in Indy do mine and they are fantastic but it's a bit far for you. My advice - do not do the belt yourself. Aside from any/many complications, as well as the specialty tools required to set tension, the biggest value adder for these cars is a sheet of paper saying somebody reputable did this service. Do them yourself. Paying someone to do them is not cheap, and it's no where near as hard as people would make you think. If you could do it on a front wheel drive 4 cyl, you'll find it much easier on the V8. Just take your time, follow the manual, and rent the tools from JAE. You can definitely use your phone for the belt tension as I had the $2000 tool to compare to my iphone and they gave the same results. Here's the kicker with paying someone to do it: 1st, you don't know if they did it right unless you go to all the trouble to check if the tension is right. If you can handle tensioning the belts, you can handle replacing them yourself. The V8's design is very friendly to DIY tensioning because there are locating pins for the cams and the crank (something I didn't get with my 4 cyl car). And when I paid the most recommended shop in the US to do my V8's belts when I first got the car, I came to learn that shop wasn't all it was hyped up to be so I checked the tension and it was set wrong. I had to redo the tensioning myself. 2nd, receipts for cam belts gone by are useless. You will probably find that you are going to keep the car longer than the belt lasts, so you will have to do it multiple times. You won't get a penny more for your car because you have receipts for 3 previous cam belt changes when the ones on the car are due to be changed at the time of sale. Cam belts are not like oil changes.
