They did catch on as a performance/boy racer item. However, they would not pass an MOT inspection without some reinforcement to replace the stiffness lost via removal of the front body structure. Again from period publications, that reinforcement consisted of bars on either side of the subframe that ran from the lower front edge of the subframe (close to where the front of the subframe attached to the stock front valence) and upward and back to the box section cross member of the firewall (close to where the suspension towers on the firewall bolted to the firewall box section). This would apparently feed loads from the front of the subframe back to the unibody structure in much the same way the original valance panel, fenders and inner fenders did. The failure mode was not so much in routine driving but in a front end collision, the subframe and power unit tending to rotate upward and backward into the passenger compartment when the reinforcement was absent. That was probably exacerbated by a Mini with a rotted out nose also having a rotted out floorpan and sills. Some producers of flip front ends sold them with the necessary bracing bars, but of course they cost more. I initially tried doing a little research but finally resorted to quantitative measurements.\r\n\r\nThe best apples to apples comparison I could find for small bore Mini versus big bore Mini is the weights of the Cooper and Cooper S from the BMC shop manual. Those models have identical trim levels so the differences in weight would be due to the mechanical components. With Hydrolastic suspension the Cooper weighs 650 kg/1433 lbs and the S weighs 698 kg/1540 lbs. But the 48 kg/107 lbs weight penalty on the Cooper S would include the engine (transmissions should be near identical), the rear brake drums with cast-in spacer, the larger front brake discs, calipers and CV joints, the brake booster and possibly the second fuel tank and oil cooler. So somewhere in there is the extra weight of the engine, if any. It\u2019s noted that the FIA homologation papers for a wet 998 Cooper and a wet 1275 S list the same weights, so these are \u201cofficial\u201d numbers.\r\n\r\nThe shop manual lists the weight of an 850 engine and transmission assembly as 333 pounds but there is no weight listed for the 1275 S assembly. The specifications section of the BMC manuals always start with full specs of the base model (the 850 in the case of the Mini manual) with subsequent sections (the Cooper followed by the Coopers S in my pre-Clubman manual) including ONLY specifications that are different from preceding sections. So they apparently didn\u2019t consider the 1275 S unit to be any heavier.\r\n\r\nI forgot that I had a separate Clubman era shop manual and thanks to @britbits for providing the figure that the 1275 GT is listed as six pounds heavier. But even with that I figured, what the heck, let\u2019s go out to the garage and do some weighing. I was planning to pull the motor out of a race car next week, so I just bumped that up to this week. It looks like the taxes get finished at the last minute, but it\u2019s for a good cause, right?\r\n\r\nUsing a digital scale with a 400 pound capacity a 997 Cooper engine sitting on it\u2019s original 3-synchro transmission and with its original coil spring clutch weighs 265 pounds. That\u2019s without starter, generator, distributor, oil filter housing, or intake and exhaust system. Basically just the meaty stuff but still a ready-to-run power unit. And yes, I keep fully built 997 power units on hand.\r\n\r\nThen I pulled a big bore motor and weighed it. It\u2019s an AA thick flange block sitting on a 4-synchro transmission. I\u2019m certain the thick flange block and 4-synchro gears are heavier just from the obvious size differences. It\u2019s equipped with a remote shifter differential housing, same as the 997, and has S Hardy-Spicer output flanges. The engine internals are all Cooper S and a light weight flywheel is probably offset by a Salisbury limited slip differential, those units being densely packed with spider gears and clutch plates. It was weighed with all the trimmings stripped off, identical to the 997, and came in at 276 pounds. Eleven pounds heavier \u2013 big whoop! And the margin of error is in line with the numbers that @britbits provided.
