I already had a couple \"big\" bikes up there \u2013 and now we could go riding together! How cool. \r\n\r\nNow I've owned a few of Ducatis over the years (still have one of them), and considered myself a pretty knowledgeable Ducati guy. \r\n\r\nBut...I was to discover, that I knew less about the Parallels than I thought....\r\n\r\nSo, the bike was for sale not far from the house, it was a great price cheap, was in good, running condition \u2013 and it had the classic black/gold paint scheme \u2013 just like on the big Darmah and 900SS. I bought it sight-unseen because I was not in NY at the time, so imagine my shock when I first saw it (bought and paid-for and sitting in my barn), and realized that it was the exact same size and weight of the 500! Which is pretty close to the same size as the legendary V-Twins. So yes, I felt pretty stupid that I made the assumption that a 350 version would be \"smaller.\"\r\n\r\nSo... no Ducati riding for my 5'4\", 100lb daughter!\r\n\r\nBut... I gotta tell you, looking at these pics reminds me how great these bikes look. The red/white is fantastic. The \"Parallels\" have always had a \"respect\" issue within the classic Ducati world, but they deserve a serious comeback (actually, I'm not sure they ever arrived in first place, so I'm not what you'd call it). \r\n\r\nI think these are a little like the 308GT4's within the Ferrari world. They both work great and have have their own unique appeal, but were different enough from the norm to be a under-appreciated. (And now that I think about it, the 350 is the 208GT4 - the same size/weight and the 308 with half the HP!) But these bikes (ok, maybe only the 500) deserve a solid place in the classic Ducati world. \r\n\r\nAnd they're better looking than the 860, imho. (Is the 860 the Ferrari 400i?) And they certainly handle better than an 860.\r\n\r\nAnd the \"Sport\" version of these is very rare. A 360 degree parallel twin, meaning the two pistons rise and fall together has the same inertial forces of a single, though the force attributable to cylinder firing is halved in amplitude while doubling in frequency, so yes they shake. The balance factor used by the designer plays a role in how much of that vibration is perceived by the rider. \r\n\r\nA 180 degree parallel twin has acceptable vibration in smaller displacements, up to around 350cc , so this one is pushing the limits in a design without a balance shaft. The 180 degree design creates a rocking couple, not unlike that created by flat twins, but more severe since the offset equals the distance between center lines of the two bores, and not just that between the rod offset in a flat twin. The short story on my history with this bike is that I wanted to get a modern enduro bike to putt around my house in Brooklyn, but then I ended up with a vintage Ducati. The longer I kept the bike I realized it just wasn't the bike that I needed to have in Brooklyn. I have similar bikes out in the country where the riding is good and curvy, so I decided to let this beauty go to someone who can really enjoy it. The vibrations are much in line with a single piston thumper. It's actually quite comfortable at higher revs 6000-7000 rpms. The bike starts amazingly quick and has been quite reliable in my limited experience. They were heavy as well comparative to power and other bikes. So, like the first model Honda V motors with their pitted camshafts, by this stage any still-running bikes should be free of the really early issues. Here is the thing: it is still a very old bike. 40 year old electrics, etc. So be prepared for \"classic bike\" type upkeep. Set aside a weekend pretty much stripping the bike down and clean or resolder every connection and check and clean and protect with dielectric grease every single ground wire. If you do that , 90% of the electrical issues go away. Don't fix one circuit and call it a day-do the whole bike. Its not like its a 2004 Maserati with a zillion possible points of electrical failures. Bikes are simple by comparison. \r\n\r\nRant over. Return your seats to their upright position and prepare for the end of the auction. This good-looking motorbike is already a cafe racer and needs nothing IMO. Keep it for the long haul; scour ebay for \u201cspares\u201d for all the electrics and any other items before you need them.
