The HP difference between a 1970 six and a 2.0 liter 1973-4 four may appear small but the torque, smoothness, and sound differ greatly. Let's not forget that the fours were a VW/Porsche joint venture with bodies sent to VW for installation of VW Type IV engines while the sixes were completed by Porsche. In Europe, the fours were marketed as \"Volkswagen-Porsches\". From a distance the two cars look almost identical, but there is no mistaking the sound of the Porsche engine. Like it or not, the market has decided the sixes are many times more valuable than the fours and I, for one, completely understand. They'll take it back to Europe if the price stays that low.\n\nThe 914/6 is not the same as a 914/4, even though I love them both. First, true to its Porsche heritage, the key goes in on the left on the dash, not into the steering column on the right as it does in vintage VW and the 914/4. You may think that is a small thing, and maybe it is, but it frames the conversation you're going to have with the car differently when you sit yourself down real low in it and reach over to the left to turn the key. Second, it is a 2.0L flat six - the same engine Porsche was using in its 911 from '69. I'm not sure you're a vintage Porsche guy, or even car guy/gal if you can't understand the difference an engine can make - not just in performance but in pure driving pleasure. Third, the performance difference is notable. 0-60 mph, while not fast by today's standards, was seconds faster in the six compared to the four. We're talking seconds, not tenths. Fourth, these cars carry the LeMans racing heritage. Fifth, the rarity. Sure, only ~3300 were made, but a lot of those didn't survive or were turned into race cars. How often do you see these for sale? They don't pop up very often. Etc.\n\nI have a collection of cars, some of which are at the peak of today's performance and have been called the best driving cars ever. I recently had a car enthusiast friend drive almost all of my cars. Guess the favorite - the 914/6. Otherwise, you would not see the large pricing differentials that, say an alloy 300SL or a lightweight Giulietta Sprint drives. And, likely a better analogy, look at the massive price differences of American muscle cars, simply based on engine configuration. Have you observed how a bunch of headlight covers on a 50's Ferrari can add a few million to an otherwise similar model? Rare is rare, no matter what.\r\n\r\nEqually important is that the 914/6 is the only one of the street cars that is fully considered a Porsche with Porsche engine, updated suspension, brakes, etc. Handling and driving is decidedly more different. And it helps explain why the Brogward Isabella Kombi, while rare, does not bring a higher level of $$$: Apart from rarity, it just does not have high marks in any of the other categories. Then, you can also look at a series of market results, to see where a specific model stands in the market. (Most experts in the business use results from auction houses as they feel that those results can be observed and validated more easily compared to private sales that lack access to verifiable information).\n\nFor the 914-6, you clearly have a combination of the above: Rarity is one. The impact of Porsche (As this is widely considered a Porsche by everyone) is another as we've outlined in earlier conversations on this car. The experience value is a third as they do drive and sound different. Racing pedigree - to a lesser extend imho - can be a fourth. All that differentiates the car from a VW-engined 914-4 and therefore drives a significant premium. We said it before, look at the price differential of engines in the American muscle car segment or the price differential of body style of an otherwise similar 50/60's Ferrari for comparison. Or, closer to home, the massive price differentials between a 911 T, E and S.\n\nThere are other elements of course: It is true that if was special then, it likely will be special now. And a Borgward Kombi likely was not special back in the day and the choice to buy one likely more driven by the utility a Kombi provided to it's user. A 914-6 was more so than a 914-4. Also, just because it did not sell in period does not mean it would not be special. The BMW 507 was a market disaster that almost ruined BMW. The front-engined Porsches were poo-poo'd upon for the longest time. The way you argue is the same way than others argued about Porsche 356 Speedsters in the 70's (\"Just a very beat-up and slow Beetle ...\"). Times change and so does what drives value.\n\nOf course, there is always a bit of exuberance in the market and there is the car du jour that everybody needs to have. Happens all the time and drives price spikes accordignly. It happened with 300SLs, it happened with the 250 Lusso, it happened with longhood 911s. But I do not think this impacts the 914-6. Given the factors above, the 914-6 has always driven a 3 - 4 times multiple over a 914-4. I've owned 3 of them (all 2.0 liters) and wish I'd bought a very original 1971 914-6 with very little rust for $3k in 1989... The market is the ultimate arbiter of value. 'Nuff said. However, I am intimately familiar with the rust problems these cars have, and I don't see pics of the areas that rot out and compromise the car's structure. The underside has a fair amount of surface rust, to be expected living in Pennsylvania, and my experience as an owner and PCA tech inspector strongly hints that you will find deeper rust in more critical areas. \r\n\r\nThe battery was mounted in the upper forward part of the engine compartment, and dripped acid down on the frame rails below it. That acid would seep into the frame rails, then run inside the right longitudinal, and rot out the rockers and frame from the inside out. By the time you see rust on the outside, the inside is Swiss cheese. BTDT and spent many hours cutting out and welding in new steel in my track car. There used to be a \"Barkley Brace\" that was a sheet of 12 gauge steel designed to shore up the frame longitudinals. They might still be available.
