Happened three times while I owned my 1979 Spitfire (which was 10 years and 60,000 miles). I began to consider the headlight stalk a consumable item. Only non-stock changes were Koni shocks and poly-bushings on each. I can't think of any car I've owned that was more entertaining to drive. No huge issues with the Midget, but the 78 had a few and the 80 was a complete disaster. After running into a series of repeat mechanical issues and bad parts, I completely lost heart. As a result, I sold my \"last (ever) British car\" in 2010 -- and haven't looked back since. Not sure if this has happened to any of you regarding a specific car, project or brand -- but once the magic is \"gone,\" it's \"GONE.\" It was the only time I can recall selling a car with absolutely zero remorse -- an automotive version of \"don't let the door hit you.\" Wishing better luck for those who are probably better mechanics than I am and/or have more patience than I have/had.
