Over the years it seems as if the \"matching numbers\" issue has become more important in terms of value. There are many people who will not consider a car without the original block and head. When you eliminate some of the potential buyers.....there is less demand, and the car becomes harder to sell. How much? It varies. I think it is compounded by whether the car has been restored, and by what I call \"price compression\". An example: I have a numbers matching '66 E-Type roadster that is a decent-looking, tired old driver. I think it is worth about $85,000. The same car, complete but not running, pulled out of a barn and needing everything, would bring about $65-$70K. Restoring either car would be at least $125,000. Yet, there are a lot of these cars available for $125-$150K. In other words, you can't get there from here. Buying an project car-- even a good one-- and paying for a restoration will most likely result in a bath, unless you do all the work yourself. Getting up over $125,000 the atmosphere gets pretty thin.....the number of buyers drops off. Insert into this picture a car without the original engine, and well, you can see the problem. I think of it as a sliding scale-- the more money put into such a car, the bigger the gap will be in value compared to a car that is all original (all other things being equal). As ever, the question of matching numbers arises and one wonders why it is of any importance. I can see the question of value arising when an engine of a different size is swapped in or a different maker. But I don't see any issue when the engine swapped in is precisely the same as the one swapped out. Would it really matter if the engine number were one or two digits above or below the original? In the present case, where the original engine was missing when the seller got it, would the car be more valuable with an empty engine compartment? People will vary on what they want. In some cases, only a matching engine number will do. In other cases, an engine of the same type is fine. For others, a swapped in engine of any sort is perfectly fine. To me, this car looks like it is on its way to a seller with ideas of a more complete restoration.
