It\u2019s in very nice condition although by no means concourse! I was a mechanic back in the UK and worked on these when they first hit the market so the maintenance has been carried out by me and I\u2019ve kept on top of anything that needed attention.\r\nI bought the GTI back in 2014 with my buddy to compete in the time and distance event at the Newfoundland Targa. We chose the GTI as we both owned and loved them in our youth and knew they were pretty bullet proof. We did pretty well and transitioned to the open class (much faster vehicles) the following year so this went into storage. The speedo malfunctioned at the event so we replaced it with a used unit, hence the apparent \u2018rollback\u2019. My son used it as a daily driver for a while, enjoying the constant stream of \u2018thumbs up\u2019 he got. He\u2019s at college now so needs a winter beater and something you don\u2019t mind putting the miles on. I have a few too many cars so this one needs to go but it will be a bit of a wrench for me and my son. They are quieter when the engine is warm. A new set of tappets would probably make it quieter, but they are not overly noisy (in my opinion!). The exhaust does not have a leak.\r\nWe \u2018raced\u2019 in the time-and-distance class which is about speed control rather than outright speed and is much less demanding in the vehicle. If you are thinking of entering in one of the \u2018open\u2019 classes, which is all about speed, then I would suggest this is not the vehicle for you. That person got everything else including the rare wheels, flares, and hatch spoiler with integrated brake light and swapped it in. I think it\u2019s wonderful! Of course it would be nice to get the original recaro interior.
