The motor \u201cbroke\u201d (not when I was driving), I helped him tow it home, and he started the investigative tear down. Fast forward a year .. engine dismantled, the crankshaft had snapped or maybe a rod bearing had spun, the parts were in three boxes, one box was lost in a move, neighborhood kids used the body for BB gun target practice, and he was being transferred several states away. I\u2019d half heartedly tried to buy it from him earlier, but as the movers were coming he told me to come get my car, for free, imagine that.\r\n\r\nI was thrilled with my first foreign car project, found an engine with a bad head, and spent many hours piecing together one that ran. Was happy when I finally got it started, but had no oil pressure. Had the engine back out twice before finally figuring out the correct sequencing of several spacers and big wavy washer things on the end of the crank, whose function it was to make oil pressure. No, I did not pay enough attention when dismantling the donor engine. If I remember right it didn\u2019t have an oil pump, maybe it did, but moving those washers around finally did the trick. I also tried my hand at bodywork and discovered that these little Fiats have no flat spots on them, all curves. \r\n\r\nMine was a late 60s Sport Spyder (big 903cc) and a blast to drive. Felt like you were flying at 45mph as you screamed thru the gears. So much fun that my wife and one of her girlfriends would still take it out even after being stranded a couple of times. I finally schooled myself in rusty gas tanks and and regular carburetor jet cleaning. An overseas assignment came my way and I remained Fiatless for 5 years. Amassed a group of 3 850s when I returned, but interests changed, space got tight, and the fleet was liquidated. The front brake pads have also been replaced and calipers rebuilt. The car was last registered in Alabama by the previous owner. The carburetor is a replacement Weber and the fuel inlet appears fine with no leaks. The car starts whether hot or cold. It has no overheating issues and shifts well. \r\n The front end is good for a 45 year Fiat. Although it runs well, I would recommend a trailer for transporting it from Alabama to Oregon.
