It had the same vents in the foot wells with the push/pull knobs to open and close. Cars were much simpler in those days, and the vent was really just open to the outside air coming into the car (from somewhere). \r\n\r\nDriving with a buddy of mine one day (as 17 year-olds are wont to do) after a heavy rain, I attempted to pass through a rather flooded section of the street (then it was only a \"big puddle\"). As I felt the resistance of the car against the deep water, I also felt something on my ankles. Water was just pouring into the foot well through those vents. I had no idea that would happen! \r\n\r\nThat little Vega took a lot of abuse from me over the few years we had it, until I wrapped it around a tree at about 30 mph at 3:00 am bringing that same friend home after a night of carousing. We were listening to the Batman theme from the Jam's 1977 \"In the City\" album (on cassette, of course), over and over till I went around that corner a little too fast and jumped the curb on the far side of the street. One of these customers ran their machine shop out of a series of 5 or 6 garages behind an apartment complex. One of the garages next to his customer was open and had a '69 Impala convertible just like this in the garage. It was dark green with a white top and interior. It looked like it was 2 years old. I was 16 or 17 and already had my '69 Road Runner coupe (1st car and I still have it) but I always wanted and had tried to buy any brand of convertible before, during and after the Road Runner. I asked my dad's customer who owned the car and he introduced us to the owner who was a couple bays down socializing with some of the guys while they were on break. He was a very friendly old man who was glad to show us the car. When I went in the garage and saw that the car was a 4 spd. with out thinking I blurted out... Is it for sale? He said \"not now but maybe some day, do you want to take it for a ride?\" Surprisingly my dad liked the car too. The man pulled the car out of the garage and got out and said to my dad, \"go ahead take him for a ride\". My dad tried to convince him to drive or at least come with us but the man insisted, so we were off. We went for a short ride around the neighborhood and all I could think about was how awesome it would be to have this 4 spd., 327, sweet sounding, dual exhaust convertible. After we returned the owner put it back in the garage. He said if he was to sell it he would want $4000 for it. He was very proud of the car and took great delight in the compliments we paid the car and his care of it. Considering my Road Runner costed me $500 and I was still on school with a part time job there was no way I could afford that. At the time that price may have been totally out of line, but he obviously didn't want to sell it. Over the years I would ride through the garage complex and sometimes see the car parked inside with the garage door open. My dad's customer told me the man shouldn't be driving and he kind of knew it so he really didn't drive the car much. I went away to college and even when I came back (my dad's customer had moved by this time) and would ride through the complex there was no sign of the car or the old man. Years later while browsing through the local newspaper classifieds there was a green/white 327 \"rare\" 4spd. convertible for sale for $2500.00. I thought it had to be the same car so I called and got the address to go look at it. It was about a 35-40 minute ride from my house. I pulled into what seemed to be a poor neighborhood, some overgrown yards and junk cars around. Sadly as I rounded a corner and started reading addresses I saw the impala. Dull paint, one flat tire, 2 black wheels, 2 rallye wheels, soiled white convertible top with a 12-18\" tear near the back window. Even if it was the car, it was so bad I never bothered to get out of my car and knock on the door. I was sick. \r\n\r\nAs a side note the quest for \"any\" convertible did end well. A few years later another customer of my dad had passed away. His widow wanted to know if I wanted her late husband's 70 LeMans Sport Convertible, no 4spd., but factory A/C , PB, PS. and 350/auto with bucket seats and console. When I saw the car sitting in the back yard under a tree I was disappointed. Then when I started the engine and we all heard the rod knock I had to say, \"no thank you, I can't even make an offer\". She said, \"I want you to have it\". So I nursed the car home took it completely apart and 10 years later it was back on the road like new. After finishing the car I went to visit the lady and her daughter, the whole family including the grand children took pictures in and around the car. A few years later I brought my daughter home from the hospital in that car and last year she drove the car on her 16th birthday. I often felt the 1969 was by far the best looking of the 3 year series, and wondered if the grille and bumper change in the 1970 was a government mandated styling compromise rather than an a planned styling \"improvement\". 1969 seemed like a youthful big car (like a Monte Carlo or Grand Prix), while its 70 and 71 brethren seemed much more utilitarian, like a taxi cab.
