Lots of great times, many amazing drives.\r\n\r\nBut the best story was how I came to have one in the first place. In 1990 the Miata was new and my Rabbit Convertible (discussed in other threads here) had just almost blown up on the highway when it threw its timing belt. (At least I think it was a belt - I'm sure the experts here will tell me if I am remembering wrong and it's really a chain.) The mechanic told me it hadn't suffered any real damage but I was skeptical so was ready to trade it in. Really wanted a Miata.\r\n\r\nThe dealer wanted something like $7k over sticker for the fully loaded Miatas. I think the base car started just north of $13k and the fully loaded versions were about $18k, so we were talking $25k for a Miata. Ouch.\r\n\r\nWhile I was leaving disappointed, I noticed an RX7 convertible parked right in front of the parking lot at the dealership and looked at the sticker. $33k if I am remembering right. But my salesman came over and said they couldn't sell those anymore with the Miata having come out, so they were offering deals. One this one - brand new - they were willing to do $7k off. I honestly don't understand how someone can own such a nice sports car for 28 years and drive it less than 3000 miles in all that time, but whatever floats your boat! As for those commenting on the potential pitfalls of buying a \"brand new\" 28 year old car that was stored much of that time, I agree - there are a number of things that will need to be addressed by the new owner if he/she intends to drive it. Rubber components will degrade & break down from age alone (dry rot), more so if exposed to sun/UV, ozone, and various chemicals present in the road environment. Tires will be flat spotted unless the car was stored on jack stands. Rubber parts in the brake hydraulics (master cylinder, calipers & ABS pump if equipped) is a big concern, then all the cooling hoses & drive belts.The entire fuel system (tank to fuel injectors) can be compromised by corrosion & gum/varnish deposits. Gasoline by itself has a shelf life, and if left to sit for long periods of time it will form gum/varnish deposits that can clog fuel injectors and other fuel system components. The ethanol content in today's fuels (typically 10%) makes this even worse, as it absorbs moisture from the air that hastens corrosion of metal parts, and some of the plastic fuel system parts made back in the 80s/90s may not be chemically compatible with ethanol and could fail. Sight-unseen, I flew out and drove it (the long way) home. Since then, I've put 15,000 miles on it. I have in my life owned some extraordinary (and at times, expensive) cars. This one is very near the top of the list of my favorites. It does so many things well. I don't know the seller, but I have come to know these cars and they're amazing. My feeling (from personal experience) is that the recommissioning costs will be well worth it. There are, thankfully, still some specialists around that support the RX7 community. One extended visit to a specialist to \"make it right\" will yield a fabulous daily driver that turns heads and earns thumbs-up everywhere.\n\nIf I could somehow quickly shift something out of my collection to make room for this, I would buy it in a heartbeat (though I don't love it in red as much as I like my silver over blue). A vintage car has needs whether it has miles or doesn't. That's factored into the cost of entry.\n\nI love this car and am already jealous of the next owner. So many classics and exotics come with what's called character (that's a nice way of saying \"headaches\"). I'd probably make nice with the unexercised rotor apex seals by adding some 2-cycle oil (4 oz or so) in the gas tank at each fill-up for a bit (an old racer trick in case of oil metering pump failure)---I did this regularly with mine once the mileage reached six digits. What a fun car! For these cars the power is in the exhaust. My car had a header and no Cats (you pic up big power). That and add a set of sway bars and it transforms the car. My car lasted 150K miles until I lost an apex seal. Now when I say drive, that means no rain or snow as @rc1966 has been so great to do for its entire life. I love RX-7's and owned this same vehicle a number of years ago. It will reside next to my '93 with 8,000 miles, which is a real thrill to drive. To put myself through college years ago, I bought wrecked\r\n RX-7's, fixed them and sold to pay for my education.
