First however as for the paint. I believe the car was repainted prior to my ownership to match the color code of the car as close as possible. The only repaint I did was to the hood and color code of the car was the basis for color selection. I suspect the angle of sun, when a set of pictures were taken, may give a \"whiter\" appearance than there is. As for the email question: except for the speedo not working, I believe I took care of any mechanical issues that I'm aware. Please see the picture of the repair order to get a better understanding of the work I had done. As for rust, except for a few minor surface rust issues near windows, there were what I consider major rust issues at each corner of the front floor board, which I had taken care of. I purchased the car in Tennessee and do not think it spent any time in New England except for the time of my ownership. Shortly after acquiring the car I had the car undercoated. My parents bought a brand new one like this but in gray, trading in a '65 Monte Carlo 850. The top-line V4 proved a thoroughly civilized car, impressive in its price and size class. It was beloved by my family, even more so after it handled the impact of a Ford Country Squire at speed and left my folks completely unhurt. They immediately bought another 96V4. No other small car of that time could have performed so well in an accident. \n@JIMMY is right regarding the speedo. So while bidding for this, the eventual buyer will need to budget up to a few thousand extra dollars for a rebuilt transmission and installation. That should correctly limit the selling price of this otherwise highly appealing 96, except for the bidder who wants it no matter the cost. The dashboard will have to come out too in order to install a new dash pad -- another expense that should be calculated into bidding. Note that the front shock towers have not rusted through. That's excellent. They should be drilled open at the top for ventilation with holes the size of a 25 cent piece, and rustproofed inside. SAAB did this starting in 1969. Similarly, the rear shock towers can receive the same treatment with smaller holes; you'd need to look at a 1970 or later car's inner trunk walls to see exactly where to drill. I did this with my 1966 and it never lost its shock tower integrity. Yes, the side engine support is stock and absolutely necessary. And I had the lower competition support in one of mine for autocross. It worked really well. I cannot point to a specific thing but my sense is that the issue was overIooked. I towed the vehicle back home after the purchase and noted the speedo didnot work when I started driving the car. I love driving the car but it does take a reintroduction to non-power steering and the older type seat belts. I find the steering very responsive and It corners well. I think the shifting is smooth in all gears. In my opinion the engine sounds normal through all gears for a 68 96. I dislike the freewheel on the 96s. I tried using when I had my new MY 73 96 but it was a pain and didn't do anything for me so I have never used the freewheel on this and previous 96s that I have owned. The drive gear is plastic, and it will melt if the gearbox has been overfilled with oil. Which is not at all uncommon. I've done it once! The drive gear can be replaced without taking the transmission apart, although there are several different variations, so finding the exact one you need can be difficult. \n\nThe speedometer cable is also a weak point and these frequently break after the car has been sitting for a long time. Should be removed and relubed on any car that's been parked for a while.\n\nThe transmissions in these do however frequently need to be rebuilt, a whining 3rd gear or whining final drive being the most common symptom of work needing to be done. The cable housing attaches to a holder screwed in the side of the gearbox. The holder has a short shaft in it that connects to the speedo cable and on the other end a toothed gear that meshes with a gear on the pinion shaft. The common failure part is the rear pinion shaft bearing, resulting in the spacers and gear for the speedo spinning freely on the pinion shaft, unable to drive the cable. Sometimes the holder will get corroded to the shaft and not turn. Although not a 96, my 71 99 had some serious gearbox woes. With only 70k on the clock I lost 2nd gear coming over the 59th St bridge from NYC on Christmas eve '77. Then lost 1st, and so forth. Horrible grinding noise. Made it to the top of the crest and coasted down into LI City. Towed home and with the help of my friend who was an Engineer at SAAB in Orange Ct (you could seem them from Rt 95) was considering doing the rebuild myself till all the specialty skill and tools came into play.\r\n\r\nEnded up buying a rebuilt box from Erikson Automotive in Ct.
