My friend had to lean across the car and hold it on by the interior grab handle as I was driving along, trying to get to somewhere that sold good, stout rope.\nI was *always* getting stopped by the police in this car. There was a 2.8 injection version of this on the U.K. and also at least a 3 litre version of the lovely Mk.1. The police assumed mine was a fast car. I got a 74 Audi Fox, one sister got a fully loaded Mustang II Ghia with V6 and automatic transmission, and the other sister got a 74 Capri with V6 and manual transmission.\nOf the 2 Fords, one would be quite reliable, and stay in the family until rust issues made driving it or licensing it impossible (the metal surrounding the windshield rotted away). The other Ford developed problems soon after delivery and was replaced within 2 years. Care to guess which was which?\nThis is a reasonably attractive Capri II unfortunately letdown by a few things, but as a former 73 Capri owner I don't think they would necessarily put me off. The V6 with automatic transmission has already been covered, ditto the wheels, as for the bumpers? Well, I read several British car magazines, a couple dealing with not-new models, and the Euro market bumpers are never advertised by companies specializing in older Fords. Not saying the bumpers can't be sourced, but close to impossible.\nStaying with appearance, the Ghia model \"usually\" came with a much wider vinyl beltline molding, did this have that molding replaced at some point? I am also trying to figure out if the hood on this car is misaligned or if there is something wrong with my tablet. The hood does not look like it is sitting \"right\" on either side as per the photos showing the headlights.\nThere is what appears to be an air conditioning compressor in pictures of the engine, does this car have A/C ? Does it work? ROKSTOCK had tons of well designed upgrade mods available back then along with other suppliers (Isky cams had two cam designs, a few different companies made headers for them, Offenhauser had a nice dual plane intake for a Holley 4bbl, etc).\r\n\r\nI think I did just about everything I could to mine before I sold it in 1981. By the time I was done, it handled fantastically and was actually fast with maybe 70-80 more hp than stock. The Isky cam idled like a drag car, which I liked at that age.\r\n\r\nIt was a crude car in many respects. I think I went through maybe 4 heater control valves, three clutch cables, etc.\r\n\r\nThere is actually an engine under that mess of hoses and such. All that stuff can go. The intake is a 2bbl with a standard bolt pattern (i.e. a Holley 500cfm 2bbl will bolt right on), so cheap mods to open up the V6 is the Holley 2bbl, headers, exhaust, and getting rid of all the junk. The OEM throttle assembly is a crazy bell-crank thing that is highly non-linear. Just putting a straight cable connection to the Holley works well. My Capri was at the Santa Rosa, CA Lincoln Mercury dealer and was a cream puff. I\u2019ll never forget the salesman coming out of the showroom.....about 6\u2019 5\u201d tall wearing an Elecric blue leisure suit! I had to turn around to hide my laugh...don\u2019t think he saw me almost lose it! In any event, I bought the car, loved it for 5 years which is a record for me owning a car. Only let me down once when the alternator crapped out on me on a tour with my \u201cCapri Club\u201d group of other enthusiast owners. These are such good cars and someone will really enjoy it. Fortunately the stock wheels come with this car as they look great on it. As others have said, these Capris look much nicer with the euro small bumpers, and these cars were continued in production in Europe for a few years (after LM stopped selling them) after with slightly revised from end around the leading edge of the hood near the headlights. But I was a kid and these were expensive as hell in the seventies. Fast forward a few years and I went shopping aggressively for a used one. Actually test drove two cars, a '76 \"S\" with automatic and a super low mile orange '77 Decor Group. No lie the V6 in the white car sounded like a Porsche flat-six, maybe because that was the year they used the two separate catalytic converters? How's that for a forgotten fact. We couldn't strike a deal and I passed. The orange '77 was two years later and in my price range but when I called back it was sold. You see clean Capri IIs were always sought after. Another nerd observation: I remember liking the '77-'78s more than the '75-76s because the bumper rub strip was thinner (this car has the fat one). When my career progressed to the point that the asking prices were no longer an issue there were none to be had. About 10 years ago I made a renewed effort to find one and have been searching bi-monthly ever since. I've seen not one (how do you underline on here?) highly original Ghia or Le Cat 4-speed for sale anywhere but then again I limit my searches to the west coast. There have been maybe three non Ghia/Le Cats (I would take either trim but am partial to the Ghia because the vinyl upholstery holds up better than the corduroy cloth on the Le Cat). Ghia automatics like this one maybe two. From what's available it would seem that a mint, or even heavy patina'd, original Ghia/Le Cat is rarer than a 914-6 with factory GT flares. All of its competitors are available by the bucketful on BaT whether they be 280Zs, 914s or 2002s. Even if I did find one that made the cut on specs and condition there would be concerns about passing smog but who cares at this point, I could always do historic plates. I'd want one with factory A/C no matter how hard that would be to make work again. To my eye the Capri II is way better looking than the Mk I, of which there are relatively plenty available, and one of the prettiest sport coupes ever made. I'm also tempted to import a late-model German-market Mk III with those splendid, slim, wrap-around bumpers and \"clipped\" front headlamps. The Cologne V6 has always been a favorite of mine and the Capri handling was right up there with the BMW 2002 maybe even better, leaf springs and all. The power steering took away the drudgery that came with driving a 280Z around town and had \"feel\" like a Mercedes system. The engine could handle the A/C which was well integrated like on an American car. The back seat was actually comfortable and the seats themselves, front and rear, felt as good to sit in as they looked. Add the solid door closing sound and you have a car that if you were lucky enough to own you would never want to get rid of. What could you get that was more pleasurable for the same money? Nothing. \n\nIf anyone is stashing away a one- or two-owner Ghia 4-speed please bring it to BaT \u2014 you will be astounded by the price and interest. It is nice to see so many Capri fans on BaT. \nIt all started for me with a yellow \u201973 2 liter 4 spd that my mother made me buy for $800 in 1982. I wanted a VW but she was sure I would die a fiery death in one but somehow she was okay to let my brother buy one\u2026.\nI became obsessed with this car that no one had heard of. So many friends thought it was a GM. After being hit by a drunk driver on a dirt road that totaled it, I started the search for my second one. I had no money and since the accident was not on a public road the insurance did not pay any claims. I figured I could fix one up cheaper than buying a running one. I finally found another \u201973 but with no motor. The body was fairly good, interior was complete, so I got to work finding and building a 2.8 to put in it. The one I found had met its demise like so many of the V6s; when the fiber-plastic time gear blew up. Tore it down and sent it off to the machine shop while I saved and bought solid metal timing gears, rods, pistons, cams, Weber carb, headers, etc. I then decided the interior needed to be \u2018fixed up\u2019. I scoured every junk yard in the area for every option ever offered on a Capri. I also spent too much money on ROKSTOCK parts, even taking a trip out to California to pick up the custom aluminum valve covers. This \u201cfixing one up\u201d turned into a full re-paint in Porsche Ruby Red Metallic, removing as much chrome as possible, getting custom made UK style bumperettes (?), gold Panasports, lowering it, and best (worst?) of all a ROKSTOCK air dam and skirts.\nThis obsession turned into me buying a few more Capris, convincing my brother to get one (metallic brown \u201976), convincing my girlfriend\u2019s dad into buying her one (white over tan \u201976), and later we bought her another (white over black \u201977 Ghia). When we had owned every iteration of Capris we bought a 1989 Merkur Scorpio and 10 years later an Xr4Ti. A year ago, I bought 2016 Focus RS and this renewed my interest in German Fords.\n\nI had hoped to find one to resto-mod; hot rod another V6 with the SVO 5sp and all that. Although this car is not a great candidate for a resto-mod I could not pass up the chance to own one in such original shape\u2026even if it had an automatic.\n\nI purchased this Capri from the 2nd owner who was in his late 80s and enlisted help from a church friend in selling it. I was also concerned about the tile so I called the owner directly, he told me he bought it from the Mercury dealer that sold it new when the 1st owner traded it in in 1986. Records and receipts support this.\n\nMy goal from the start with this listing was to get as many good, clear pictures as I could to show the condition of this un-modified Capri II. The only rust I have found anywhere on the car is clearly shown in the pictures of the front driver\u2019s fender; both inside and out. As with any car that is 40+ years old body damage and quality of repairs are a concern. However, with this vehicle the only body work looks to be the repaint in 2000. I have the receipt for this work and there is no mention of body repairs. As noted in the listing and shown in the photos, there is an un-repaired dent in the hatch. I can get more close-up pictures and thickness gauge readings and add them to the original 67 photos.\n\nI have been driving and enjoying this car since I bought it last summer. I am amazed at how much fun it is (and I own an RS), it is small and light so a little too easy to spin the tires. All the rubber in the suspension is tired and needs to be replaced. It starts every time, but it could use a valve adjustment since it has solid lifters. I replaced the leaking mechanical fuel pump and changed the oil. I also gave it good cleaning, even removing the seats to clear out all the coins and cassette tapes.
