Let me anticipate some questions and comments with additional information:\r\n\r\nThis is a solid driving car, not a \u201cproject.\u201d If you are the winner, you can drive it home, instead of \u201cbringing a trailer\u201d! Of course, it\u2019s a 70-year old car, so bring some tools if you plan to make a road trip, but there aren\u2019t any hidden mechanical or electrical problems that I know of. The battery is about 4 years old, but it cranks the engine easily and for a long time. It has a 12 volt GM alternator, so even if that decides to quit, you can replace it at any domestic auto parts store. The starter was new 4 years and about 2000 miles ago. Replacements are available at many domestic parts stores. The Pertonix ignition module has never missed a spark since I installed it 5 years ago, and it has a Pertronix coil. No more messing with points. Be sure to view the compression test pictures and the spark plugs. The tires have very good tread. \r\n\r\nElectrical: when the car was restored, a new custom wiring harness was installed for the interior and dash into the engine bay. I added more replacement wiring in the trunk, to the backup lights, and to the headlights and a new fuse block under the dash. \r\n\r\nPaint: The paint is in good condition, with touchups. It is \u201cdriver quality\u201d rather than \u201cshow quality.\u201d The original color was a different shade of green, like the green on Jay Leno\u2019s 1953 Hornet (see video). Although the car was disassembled for painting, a few spots under the courtesy lights and in the trunk show the original color. \r\n\r\nInterior: Excellent. Someone spent a lot of money and time restoring it. If you view the Jay Leno video, you will note that his car has the same interior too. All the switches and instruments work, even the clock! I moved the heater valve from the passenger footwell to the engine bay. Now it will not leak on the passenger's feet and carpet\u2014yes, that happened to me. The original valve is included with the spare parts.\r\n\r\nRust: Other than the three spots pictured, it is exceptionally clean, straight and rust-free. I have had the panels off the two left doors to lube the locks and did not see rust inside. The pictures of the bottoms of the 4 doors show no rust bubbles. The floors show no rust through or bubbles from under the car. The fenders do not have rust. The trunk floor had some surface rust at the back edge, which I sandblasted and painted with primer. The close-up pictures of the right rear fender show a palm-sized area of a body repair, apparently to smooth a dent repair. A prior owner scraped against a hard object at some point after the body work and paint, and cracked that repair (also see pictures from previous BaT auctions). I have not found any filler elsewhere on the body. \r\n\r\nThe transmission was throughly inspected and rebuilt by the senior tech at Vancouver Transmission in Vancouver WA (he has been working on Hydramatics for over 50 years). In addition to the usual clutches, bands, gaskets, and seals, he replaced several worn hard parts with good used or new parts. For those of you not familiar with the original GM Hydramatic 4-speed transmissions, they did not use a torque converter, but instead a \u201cfluid coupling.\u201d Those have less slip than the later torque converters, consequently, the shifts are firmer than later 3-speed automatics. Depending on how hard you are accelerating or decelerating on downshifts, the shifts will chirp the tires. It\u2019s the nature of the beast.\r\n\r\nHow many miles does it have? BaT likes to say, \u201ctrue mileage unknown.\" The state of Washington does not register odometer mileage on titles for older cars. But, as far as I can tell, from the moderate wear on various components, the 83Kmi on the odometer is accurate or pretty close to it. The car is registered as a 1952 model because it was first registered in November 1952, but it is a 1953 model year. I believe the engine and transmission are the original units. The engine block has the correct casting number and the serial number is in the right range for a car manufactured in late 1952, but factory records are no longer available to confirm the exact number. That might be surprising for a company that got merged into American Motors almost 70 years ago, and whose models were then quickly discontinued; however, like other small manufacturers of that time, Hudson did not design their own electrical parts, brakes, and other parts, but used \"off the shelf\" parts from the big suppliers that were common to many other makes. Example: A few months back I was popping the parking light fuse when I turned on the lights. At one point I thought the headlight switch was bad, so I checked at the local O'Reilly and I could get a replacement headlight switch for about $25. That particular store didn't have it in stock, but could have it the next day from another store. The ignition switch and flasher unit are also standard parts still available. The original starters, generators, voltage regulators, and distributors were Autolite. The transmissions were common to many other cars. The \"Big Six\" engine rebuild parts are still available. Body panels, fenders, and the like are also available from multiple sellers and at reasonable prices. Much of the trim is stainless steel and doesn't deteriorate, so those items are also available used through the HET Club classifieds and on eBay, and there is plenty of NOS trim still for sale, consequently, it's not expensive either. Chromed parts are more difficult to find in good used condition, and getting the old parts re-chromed is expensive, as it is for every other old car. The main things of interest are the bag with windlace, which is for replacing a section that got some mouse chewing at the edges of the left rear door frame (one of the mini-projects I didn't get around to), the original heater valve, electrical parts that were removed when I installed the Pertronix, a set of good front wheel bearings, etc. The stainless steel bottle-shaped thing is an exhaust tip that is new and has the Hudson logo on the tip. I picked up a Hudson Rocket chrome piece that goes at the front of the long trim strip along the side, but unfortunately it is for a 1952, instead of 1953 (they are different sizes--maybe you can swap it for the right one at a meet or through the WTN). The right rear turn signal lens pictured has cracks, and I took it off when I installed a clear one on the car. The clock I bought off eBay to use for parts to repair the original clock (I cleaned and restored the original clock, but as I was putting the instrument panel back in, I managed to crack the original glass!!). All those were changed on this car. The heater motor is optional. Some people just run the 6V motor on 12V, and keep the fan speed down (there is a rheostat in the fan speed switch that controls voltage to the fan motor), but the better method is to either add a power resistor to the circuit, or to replace the fan motor with a 12 volt motor (which conveniently is still available many auto parts stores and online stores). I don't know which method was used with this car. If I were keeping it, I would check and replace the fan motor at some point. The instrument voltage regulator does not need to be changed, because it can regulate the 12-14 volts down to the low voltage the instruments use. Many other cars continued to use low voltage instruments even after they had switched to 12 systems, and these regulators are easy to get from Summit Racing and many other online retailers. The points ignition system will continue to work on 12V, but I switched it to a Pertronix 12v unit, so that's moot. The original AM radio would need to be converted or have a power resistor, or better yet, a voltage regulator installed. It doesn't work, so I never thought about that.\n\nThe starter can be run on 12 volts, for awhile, but eventually the increased engagement smack of the starter pinion Bendix will crack the nose of the starter housing.
