A car that cornered like a go-kart and got better than 8MPG. Had so much fun with that car. At 6'5\" (and skinny then), I would have people stop and watch if I started getting into the car. Took it off road on a motorcycle trail. Drove across a campus pedestrian bridge over a creek with two inches of clearance on each side at Chico State College on a dare. Wailed down Lombard Street in SF with 4 people in the car, and discovered that boiling brake fluid can be a problem. Drove it at top speed on the way to college with the windows all open and the heater on to keep the car cool in the Sacramento Valley in September, with everything I owned in the car. This particular car brings back all the great memories. Still miss my '66 Mini Cooper S, blue CA plate 603ATV. Don't remember details like that on many of the other 81 cars I have owned. But EVEN GREATER LISTING!!!!! Almost every important detail is included with this car, and clearly shown in the photos. From the correct head block and gearbox to the date coded trunk latch and dip switch this is an honest and original car. This cars \"Patina\" or what I would describe as \"Wear and Tear\" (Google both for real definition) are completely normal for a Mini of this age that has been used and enjoyed. Having not been restored is a big plus whether you want to drive it as is or do a real restoration or anything in between. As time goes on and special examples of cars like this one become more coveted, the word restoration takes on a whole meaning. The originality of this car and the inclusion of all of the proper removed components will go a long way towards meeting any future plans for this car. All of the non working components on this car are typical of this era of British car especially the Mini. If the owner did not stay on top of these nuisance failures, they tend to accumulate and it gets to where it seems that nothing in the car works except what has been repaired to keep it running. The odometers almost all failed at about the mileage shown, a couple of the very small plastic gears that press onto small pin like shafts eventually split. Many instrument specialists can get these gears and easily repair and beautifully restore all of these original gauges. I mention the the odometer because I believe that this obviously would have more mileage accumulated since it failed, but I don't believe it has alot more than shown. My OPINION is based on the fact that many of the rare and desirable parts of this car were common failure items even when they were driven gently. For the first 30 years these failed parts were often just discarded and replaced with \"later greater\", \"high performance\", rebuilt exchange\" or just whatever was available to get them back on the road. I am a true lover of this vintage of Mini Cooper cars and have owned mine for over 30 years. My kids will sell it, give it away or maybe pay someone to haul it away as trash when I am gone. They were great cars for their time but let's be honest it is what it is, a 60's British car and by 60K miles if it hadn't recently been replaced it was probably rusting away, worn out or water damaged. Definitely better suited to the handy/crafty when they were really used for transportation. Better today as a hobby, occasional use, collector or social event car. At 52 now and comfortable but not wealthy, I have several perfomance cars, but my Mk1 Mini Cooper \"S\" is still the most fun time machine I have, and once heard from very \r\nlimited acquaintance who is wealthy (Forbes top 50 billionaire). His collection is in the teens of millions and most are driven, he expressed that his family 65' \"S\" and Porsche 356 are his favorite to drive. On the door edge at the panel joints you can see the green along the panel butt edges.\r\nAt first I thought I was seeing things, or possibly thought that the door had been replaced off an Almond Green car.\r\nBut then I noticed that if you look closely at the photos of the sills, you can clearly see where the blue paint was thin, or has worn through, on the outer face you can see the Almond Green through the Blue paint.\r\nOn the right hand rear parcel bin there is a dent on the leading edge and you can see the green paint behind the blue.\r\nThe other big give away is that the original cars where color painted directly over the red oxide primer. This car has a white or off white undercoat under the blue.\r\nWhoever repainted this car did an extremely thorough job as the car appears to have been stripped to a rolling shell before it was repainted. As others have already noted, he did a lot of the heavy lifting and when he provided pictures I didn't have much to comment on. I am particularly impressed that he had the Hydro units rebuilt. Too many folks would have trashed them and gone to rubber cones or, worse yet, coil springs. As often seen on BaT, missing Hydrolastic suspension is a common bodge that's a lot of work to undo when none of the system is present. It's like my dentist tells me about teeth; do whatever capping, crowning or rebuilding is necessary to avoid pulling them. Kudos to the seller for making the effort to do things correctly and maintain the originality of this Cooper S. We'll know if it was worth that effort in a little over 12 hours.\r\n\r\nI will bring up one nit, mainly because no one else has commented on it and partly because I'd comment if I saw it on another car. The carburetor tags should end in L and R (for left and right on a transverse engine) rather than F and R (for front and rear on a fore and aft engine). The 146 number is correct for this year of Cooper S with a 1275 engine and I cannot find a 146 number for any fore and aft engine. That's not too tough to correct but I'd let whoever made the tags know that their product is off a bit. As additional triva, there were three different carb tag numbers for the three different Cooper S engines with the only difference being the needles according to the SU parts lists. Beyond needles the S carbs also differed from the standard Cooper 997 and 998 carbs in that the S units do not have the vacuum tap for a distributor advance. For 1970 the 1275 S carbs had a different tag number because the 'QE' had a different part number, but at this point I can't figure out what the QE is.\r\n\r\nAs others have also pointed out, there's really not much to comment on here other than the good job done towards maintaining originality. Had them in college and just out of college. Last one was a green MKII with a sunroof. I did a pretty extensive refurbishment/upgrade on it and it was taken out by a MB coming around a turn in my lane. I walked away from that head on, but was hurting. The car was totaled, and the MB was probably as well. My car bounced of the MB like a billiard ball and half the damage was when it hit the curb sideways and buckled the body a bit. Very sad ending to a great car\r\nI have watched the price of these and have been astounded at what they are worth if they are real and original. I start to think about what you can buy with that money (like an RS4 AND an E39 M5). Then I think about the times when I was hoping to win a lottery and what my car collection would be. It ALWAYS included a Mini Cooper.
