The Magnette Mk. III that followed the ZB was one of the few instances where the BMC-Farina styling did not improve on the earlier car. The ZA/ZB were the superior Magnettes from a styling standpoint. There are some nice 'sympathetic\" upgrades here that make this MG more useable, and the maroon engine color is just right. However, I'm always amused when covering a thousand miles without issue is considered an achievement! It does speak well of this car's condition, but any properly maintained, modern-era British car should do no less.\r\n\r\nMy only issue here is the Cal Custom looking air filter. I can understand not using the original oil bath filter, but something resembling the original metal filter can would fit in much better and shouldn't be too difficult to fabricate. I found an engine compartment picture online with the original filter housing painted the same maroon color as the engine and it works quite well. That minor nit aside, this should do well. This, being a 'Varitone' model has the additional chrome trim and the larger rear window which adds appeal. The mechanical modifications will greatly enhance drivability ( whilst 'above average' as regards performance at the time the first Z magnettes were introduced in '54..they fall short by todays standards..although handling and steering remains very good) and the 3 main MGB engine is a direct bolt in once the magnette specific parts are added (not so the later 5 main as it has a different oil pan bolt pattern ..the Z magnate has a forward facing oil pan as was also used in the J2 Vans) this looks to be avery nice example and is far more useable than any of the 2 seater MGs.. could be compared in concept to the iconic Mk2 jaguar , but was smaller and affordable to the masses 'back in the day' as well as being considerably rarer than any of the MG sports cars today. After I bought Pearl I fixed the temp and the fuel gauge. I also added brighter bulbs in the dash. I had the radiator rebuilt because she ran a little hot at low speeds. Still the same temp so I added a 6 bladed fan,problem solved.The last owner had the rear brakes done including wheel cylinders and he had a new distributor installed . If you are wondering if I am qualified to do my own work , I work for a BMC dealer as a mechanic when Magnettes where still fairly new.When I did the tune up the compression was 150/150/ 150/ 145. The engine oil pressure is 25 lb at idle and 70 lb at cruising speed. I made a new rear mount for the rear of the transmission and the rear seal was leaking .It turned out the drive shaft was a little to short and the front yoke could wobble ,causing the seal to leak. We are lucky to have a drive shaft builder in town. He came buy the shop after work one evening [riding a Harley ] and we measured the shaft to make sure we got length right. No more leak. On the seats ,the back seat is fine. The outside panels on the lower front seats have some cracks.The back rests need some dyeing and I will do that before the buyer picks it up. My seats were worse than these. They came out looking really great. \r\n The kit includes a really good cleaner that will take some color off the old leather, then you soak the leather with a rejuvinating oil. It softens the leather. You won't believe how well! Then sand down the high spots around the cracks, then you fill the cracks with a putty that dries but is totally flexible, sand it again, then brush or spray on the color. Spraying looks better in the end, but many people are satisfied with brushing. Let it dry and buff. \r\n it retains the patina of the original leather but looks like new if you have the patience to do it right. it doesn't take that long.\r\n It is similar to Claussen which I used in the 70s. These seats are a perfect candidate for this treatment. \r\n BTW, it's possible to put air conditioning in these cars. But you need a custom, combined aluminum radiator and condenser. At the end of everything I'm working my way though doing most of what has been done to this car to mine and am installing a 5 main MGB engine (Using an oil pan adapter plate and a few modifications to make it fit) and a 5 speed T9 gearbox and 4.1 final drive. In stock trim, the Magnette drove well, but the gearing is far too high for my liking in modern traffic and even at 55 mph it was uncomfortably loud. I'm also redoing my interior as my car originally had maroon seats which had been reupholstered and replaced with black vinyl. To that end I purchased the seat covers from NTG Motor Services (the www.mgbits.com link posted already) and am very happy with their quality and fit so far (I've reupholstered the front seats so far but still have to finish the back.
