The Rampage would go anywhere in that weather as long as the snow wasn't so deep that the nose got packed with snow. I was amazed. It also got great gas mileage and could hold all our camping gear, so it became the vehicle of choice for 2-4 hour drives to great camping destinations. It was an 83 and I'd swear it was a 5-speed, not 4-speed. My brother was co-oping with huffy Bicylcles and brought home some great \"Fire Rescue\" stickers and decals which we strategically placed on the Rampage. One time in the Smokies, a park ranger actually thought we were part of a fire rescue team from Ohio and we let him believe that. I am a real fan of the Rampage and its Plymouth variation the Scamp. My first was a 1984 Rampage that another Mopar enthusiast in town had modified with the complete 2.2 turbo 5MT drivetrain from a wrecked Shelby Charger. It also included the turbo equal length axles, five lug brakes and wheels and then a sampling of the Mopar Performance (or was it still Direct Connection at the time?) parts like cam, upsized turbo, top mounted intercooler and ECU. It's worth noting the Rampage/Scamp is the lightest of all the small L-body Omni based FWD Mopars of the time. It was the quickest of all the dozens of turbo FWD variations I went through in the nearly 20 yrs I played with them. Most ridiculous was breaking two transaxles with clutch drops and on another occasion cracking the windshield with the same move. The windshield in L-bodies is a structural stiffener that is bonded in place so I was apparently flexing the body. My final move was replacing the 2.2 with a built 2.5 using the lower geared turbo minivan automatic with its higher stall converter. The combo of a 2.5 with an automatic is a sweetspot for the many variations of the time. The forward weight bias across the developing FWD platforms of the time surfaced as an engineering challenge because as you experienced rear wheel lockup equals spin. By the time of the minivans a compensation was in place with a link from the rear axle to a frame mounted proportioning valve. Minivans might have only a driver with little weight in back or six additional passengers loading it heavily. The variable proportioning valve would bias heavily to the front brakes unloaded but shift some rearward with a little spring compression. I didn't experience sensitive braking in my Rampages but I was running the bigger front brakes from turbo L-bodies which would shift braking bias forward. I also got to run 15 and 16 inch alloys with sticky rubber as I swapped to the five bolt wheels. The 1984 normally aspirated GLH based on the Omni (a Chrysler-Europe Simca) was an obvious response to the introduction of the US GTI in 1983. The Golf/Rabbit Caddy pickup had come out in 1979 and here we were three years later with another Chrysler Corp Omni variation in the same mode.
