The first thing was the sticker price. Not counting the four door Land Cruiser it was the first Toyota car with a sticker price over $10,000 and we were shocked. My dad laughed and predicted no one would spend that kind of money on a Toyota and he was right for awhile. In those days Toyota wasn't the power house it is now and it took awhile for the car to take off. The dealership owner hated the flooring costs and would sell one at dead true cost in a minute. The second thing that amazed us was the overall quality and refinement of the car and the engine was amazing. Whisper quiet and so smooth and vibration free you'd swear it was electric. To this day I've never experienced a smoother engine. I think it might have been Toyota's first EFI car and they got it right. They also used this same SOHC version in the Cressida for a few years. I rarely won as the Supra was much faster, but if I got to the twisties before him, the high school driveway was mine as the first Supras were more a gentleman express than true sports car (and I was a better driver:-).\r\n\r\nFor their day they were pretty fast and very luxurious, and built like jewelry. The younger crowd might not see this based on the cars of today, but we are talking late 70's & early 80's. Fuel injection was still rare. These Toyotas were simply superior and that six cylinder (which was almost unheard of in a Toyota) ran like a sewing machine. I still think it was the smoothest car I have ever been in. \r\n\r\nFor those who may post date this era, you must understand that these were expensive and special cars for their day. These were the first true high dollar Toyota's which was followed in 1981 with the second generation Cressida which was directly related to the original Supra. The Supra and Cressida were $10-12K cars when the average car price was $7K. And this was still a time where older people considered anything made in Japan they way we consider stuff made in China. $12K for a Japanese car was unheard of. The straight 6 in these Supra's was buttery smooth and just continued to pull and pull... It can be sold PNO and not require California smog until it is ready to drive. \r\n\r\nThis case is a bit different because it seems like this car was purchased to be a part of a collection.... and there would be no point for the seller to smog it before the auction because it\u2019s more than reasonably possible it will be going out of state. \r\n\r\nMy .02 is that if this car passed 4 years ago and hasn\u2019t been out on the mean streets there is very little that I would imagine would have a problem in 2000 (was that right?) miles since then.
