After running the engine and turning it off I noticed the stud had broken off. This stud also holds the bracket for the fuel line. When I rebuilt the engine I must have mixed up the studs, The head was reconditioned with valve seats for leaded gas, so the right thing to do would be to remove the head install new studs and install hardened valve seats. I'm not very worried about that. Tons of replacement pieces available to fix the things that bother you. I'm most concerned about the car sitting for 24 years unused. The stud failure is indicative of other problems to come if not addressed before use. The car needs to be completely gone through by a master mechanic. All the bushings, seals and other rubber and replaceable suspension components need to be replaced. The brake system will likely need major work, so If i were to buy this car I'd probably take the opportunity to upgrade the entire system. Similarly the clutch. The engine should be disassembled and inspected. As long as you are doing that, you might consider rebuilding with hardened valve seats to better deal with unleaded fuel. If you have access to a good speed shop that works on TR3s , you could talk to them about performance upgrades during rebuild if you want that. Then the body needs to be addressed. The first photo tells the story with that thick deteriorated body filler. While the engine is out, I'd want to take down to bare metal to see what I was dealing with. Then remove rust, weld, lead, skim coat, paint. @ Tobyallen has it right. This is an honest project car. These panels look to be original. The apron looks very good and would be fairly easy to repair properly as does the fender. Overall, this car looks pretty solid. \r\nThis car still has the factory seam between the rocker panels and the b-pillar. Solid TRs will still have this seam. It's the first place I look at when determining overall body condition. Most of these TRs rust out here first and where there was once rusty metal there would be lots of filler. I'd rather see bubbling paint and the original panel seam in this area than lots of filler. It's the incorrect use of body filler with the predictable failure from incorrect use. It was a quick fix for a quick driveway paint job on an inexpensive driver. It met the owners needs at the time. Nothing wrong with that, but it does cover-up rust and put off bigger issues to be dealt with later. Again nothing wrong with that as long as it is disclosed. I commend the seller for being so honest about the car and history. He is doing it right. \r\n\r\nThe correct way to repair and paint classic old cars (defined as the way that will not rust out under the filler and will last without paint bubbling and deterioration for many years) is to take them down to bare metal so you can see any rust or damage; hammer back into the correct shape as needed; cut away any rust or failing steel; weld in replacement metal as needed and grind down as much as is possible; then use lead to do as minimal body fill as possible ( The factory used lead when these cars were hand built for the same purpose); then lastly a final extremely thin skim coat of synthetic filler where needed to smooth very small surface imperfections (not collision damage); then primer, then paint; then clear coat. \r\nAn example of this being done pretty well is in the pics of the current auction for the 1977 Alfa Romeo Spider. Notice all the rust that was hiding and that they cut away. The reason for these pictures was for everyone to see what I thought were the important body issues. When I had it repainted it was because the original paint was scratched and faded. If there was other bondo work done it was for parking lot dings not rust problems. I undercoated the entire underside of the car including the engine compartment right after I bought it. The car never left California the whole time I owned it. There is some corrosion in the battery tray, that's why there is the plastic insert. I just checked the thickness of the bondo on the left front fender and is 1/8 inch thick at the thickest point, maybe it was bad picture I took. She had a blast, put her hands in the air like it was a carnival ride with the wind blowing thru her hair. Had thoughts of keeping the car just for her. The car is fun to drive. I have presented the car as completely and honestly as possible, someone is going to get a car that can be a daily driver (once the head stud is repaired) or a complete car for restoration without having to replace a lot of pieces. I believe everything is there and repairable.
