I ran it as a daily driver in London for years. \r\n\r\nWhen my \u201888 Range Rover (also a blind eBay purchase) spilt its gas tank in half on the eve of a banger rally we stickered up the E30 and drove her across Europe. She did not miss a beat.\r\n\r\nWe left her in a hotel car park outside Venice for about a year. Under threat of prosecution we finally flew out to get her. After a quick jump from a Merc (a W126 500 we had also left for a year, complete with flames down the side) she drove home like a brand new car.\r\n\r\nPhenomenal.\r\n\r\nSadly, I moved over seas ten years ago. I left the car with a friend, who failed to look after her and scrapped her after blowing the engine. \r\n\r\nHeartbreaking.\r\n\r\nThese are the go anywhere, do anything car for all occasions. There's a punch out in the sheetmetal on the passenger side that the hard lines route through to the engine compartment and a large grommet that would fit in there. Then you would need to get all the hardware to mount the compresser, dryer, condenser. You'll also want to find an A/C front valance that has both air inlet slits below the bumper punched out (notice how only one is punched out?) \r\n\r\nThere's also the cooling fan, and the additional wiring for the two speeds of the cooling fan (it's when you push the little snowflake button, the fan goes to high speed) and this will need to be integrated with the main harness. Though, the leads may already be in the existing harness since by this time, BMW was tending to use a single harness regardless of options. There is some other changes, but I can't recall all of them at this time. Above that MPG suffered but never saw less than 25 to 27 per tank average. A few times I actually say over 30 pushing 35 mpg. The 2.0 was smother and much more efficient than the 2.5. It pulled strong and steady till around 60mph than slowed down but continued to accelerate smoothly up to 3 digits but after 85 it was very slow and highway passing needed a little planning but nothing dangerous IMO. 0 to 45 was IMO just as nice as a 325 but without the really hard 1st gear second gear lunge the 325 gives when shifting. The 2.0 is actually reviewed on many european sites originally as the better refined and overall best engine BMW offered at the time for the 3 series in Europe. Big thing about it is don't go and do headers and open exhaust and stuff the engine needs the back pressure for performance you will completely lose your torque by opening up the exhaust. I have driven m20 2.0, 2.5, and 2.8 ETA and the 4 cylinders and the torque of the m20 always will trump the 4 banger. You can modify the diff to LSD and go to a medium case from the small and play with the gears for personal preference or go induction but BMW tuned that engine(the 2.0) perfect and its a lovely engine to drive as is. If I remember it was like 120-130hp but 150 or so in torque.
