Was it a factory plate, or just flat metal? Could the spring have been reversed (which some have done to lower their cars)? Is it possible to get a picture of the spring and mount?\r\n2. Pictures on a lift would also be appreciated of the entire floor pan/frame and beneath the battery as these were, of course, very susceptible to rust.\r\n3. Were the pop-riveted repair shown in photo 58 and bolted on trunk floor panel in photo 59 done prior to your ownership? If so, is there any way to tell if pop-riveted panels covered with bondo were also used on the rest of the car prior to painting?\r\n4. I see bubbles, as described, in photo 21 in the lower part of the front fender in front of the door. Are those all of them, or do they extend higher?\r\n5. I also see bulging bondo on the front bottom of the door in the same photo and in photo 14. Apart from that (and the bubble visible in photo 24 in front of the rear left wheel arch), are there any other areas of bubbling?\r\n6. Do the window regulators work?\r\n7. Any problems with the electrical i.e., do the instruments, turn signals, lights, high beams, heater fan etc. all work?\r\n8. I take it that you added the performance bits. As far as the front end, I\u2019ll have to disagree with you, it doesn\u2019t sit particularly low. The leaf spring and plate are stock. The po started the restoration with the intention of racing the car so it was lowered. I replaced all three springs and the front mounting plate when I got it.\r\nSorry, I am currently abroad so I can\u2019t take any more pictures. This car has been wet less than ten times in the last 23 years and only really really wet twice when I got caught in thunderstorms on my way home from car shows. I never even washed it with a hose. \r\nThe only riveted area is under the spare tire in the front, done very nicely by the po. No other panels are bolted on. \r\nThe only bondo that I am aware of on the car is on the drivers rear quarter from the unfortunate parking lot incident described above. The bubbling on the passenger fender was there when I bought the car and hasn\u2019t progressed much since.\r\nThe windows work. \r\nAll the electrical works. \r\nI picked up the head from a guy in Italy who said it was from a parted out wreck and had little use. I had it checked out, cleaned up and had a fresh valve job. All four cylinders show good compression. \r\nNo smoke. \r\nI discovered a hairline crack in one of the fluid reservoirs when the car was pulling to the right on heavy braking four or five years ago. I replaced the reservoir which cleared up the problem for the most part. I purchased new front brake lines and hoses with the intention of going over the whole thing but never got around to it. I did put on some slotted vented rotors at some point as well. This gives me inspiration to do some more work on mine to get them in good running order.\r\nI see that the rearmost crossbow of the convertible top is not fully opened to the rearward position in the pictures with the top up. When that crossmember is folded back into its fully extended position the profile of the convertible top will be tighter and look better.\r\n@RotorRick - I knew an old guy that flat towed his 850 Spider all over the place with an equally old VW van. He had removed the front bumper of the 850 and attached to each front bumper mount of the 850 a leg that joined in a V-shape to the the nose that drops onto the hitch ball. He safety-chained to the front transverse spring mount of the 850 and drove with the parking lights of the 850 on. Back in those days he didn't even use auxiliary towing brake lights.\r\n@Tom Payne - Seat belts definitely a good idea, but if you get involved in much of a collision in one of these, as with many older sports cars, you're gonna be toast anyway. I bought it from a friend for one Ben Franklin, with an agreement to throw in a Ulysses S. Grant if I could get it running without additional cost - which I did just by reconnecting all the vacuum hoses according to the factory diagram. Wicked little thing had radials on the front and bias tires out back. I couldn't afford new tires and, technically, if I'd had a flat the car could almost be totalled, with a new tire nearly doubling my all-in investment. Needless to say, I got good at drifting before anyone knew what to call it. God, I loved that car. The best part was that I could drive like a madman in that thing and nobody but me would know it! And 30+ mpg no matter how I drove it. I have a motorcycle engine now that's less than 100cc bigger with more than twice the power, but still not as much fun as that Italian temptress. The party came to an end when I got a recall notice in the mail. I dutifully took the car to the last remaining Fiat dealer service center on the east side of Columbus. (They'd stopped selling cars long before, but were obligated to provide warranty and recall service for some mandated period of time afterwards.) They immediately put it up on a lift and smashed a sledge hammer through the floorboard under the driver's seat. They asked me how I'd gotten the car to the dealership. When I told them I drove it there, they just shook their heads, told me how lucky I was that my butt didn't end up on the pavement, and that I'd better call somebody for a ride home. I was too shocked to tell them that I had just taken her out for a final thrashing, drifting through some favorite country corners and seeing just how fast she'd still go on the freeway to get to them. I signed the paperwork and was handed a check for four times what I'd paid for her. These days I drive some amazing muscle cars and exotics for my job, but nothing has come close to that first love.
