I believe it would fall under the preventative maintenance item. As you know some cars with the aforementioned issues haven't experienced any failures at all. At the end of the day, if there was any indication my wagon needed it at this very moment, I would do so. I acquired mine with 71k miles, and it now has 97k. It had always been dealer-serviced and had a multi-page VMI (the MB dealer \"permanent record\" of a car's service history) to go with it.\n\nFirst of all, the good: of the three \u00fcberwagons\u2014this, the CTS-Vagen, the Panamera Sport Turismo\u2014this is the only one that does the \"wagon\" part well. The cargo areas of the V-wagon and the Panamera are laughable compared to the E-class. The rear seats are a bit of a party trick, but they do come in handy for transporting *small* children. (A note to the seller that according to MB, you need to have the cargo cover \"bar\" in place when the rear-facing seats are unfolded as shown in your photos.)\n\nThe driving experience, to me, strikes the perfect balance between being comfortable and aggressive. It's not taught like an M5\u2014the air suspension makes it surprisingly supple\u2014but somehow the it also feels tossable and not understeer-y. It feels more pointable than an E46 M3, if that says anything. The engine is a monster but not in the way that the new turbo motors are; you need to lean into it a bit, but you'll be surprised when you get there.\n\nEverything bad I can say about the car has to do with the M156 engine. My experience\u2014and this is anecdotal; YMMV\u2014is \"bring a checkbook\". When I bought the car, it had weeping valve cover gaskets (known issue). I took it to my factory-trained indy mechanic, who noted that the cam lobes had started to degrade (another known issue). While the cams were out, I told him to do the headbolts (the most well-known failure point); the headbolts he pulled looked very corroded, so I think this was the right choice. All told, we basically top-overhauled the motor at a cost of over $8k\u2014over half of that in parts alone. I wish I had done the cam adjusters too, because they've recently starting making noise on startup (known issue); fortunately, noisy cam adjusters rarely destroy an engine.\n\nWhat I later learned WILL destroy an engine, however, are the early M156 fuel injectors, which have a tendency to fail in the open (full duty cycle) position. It turns out that so good are the injectors, they deliver enough fuel to hydrolock a cylinder when they fail. As I write this, the car needs a #5 cylinder rod (and a new intake manifold, because the current one is cracked\u2014known issue). More likely, it will get a complete motor swap, because that's more cost effective.\n\nLong story short, these are good cars. Bought an 07 with 34k miles a few years ago and currently have an 06 E55 with about 700hp. The E63 benefits from a slightly better looking interior, a better braking system, a better transmission and a better head unit. I go back and forth on the looks of the front ends but that being said, am currently swapping an E63 front end onto my E55. \r\n\r\nI agree that the head bolt issues are way overblown and often give signs first. If you are getting low coolant warnings with no leaks after topping off often, you might have the issue but it's certainly not very common and in the end, not a terribly expensive repair.
