Changing to modern tires creates a visually jarring disconnect (for me), as would a set of digital instruments because they work better. The defense for modern-style tyres that the bike is for \"riding,\" not just looking at, falls flat. Those Avons on this lovely machine have enough grip and lean angle to shepherd a modern sport bike 'round the corners at breathtaking speed and lean angle, dragging footpegs\u2014if not knees. But not only will this Vincent most likely never be ridden that way, but its handling\u2014once considered superb\u2014could never make use of even half the Street Runners' capabilities, and a set of period-correct Avons (Speedmaster Mk II front and SM rear), manufactured with the latest rubber compounds, will still exceed the limit of handling aggression this machine will ever see. And look the part in the process. Just because something that is valuable does not make it rare.\"\r\n\r\nI think this particular brand is cherished because a person can ride and enjoy. They were the fastest motorcycle in the 1940/50's doing over 100mph when there really were not any roads to go that fast. Just like any old vehicle they were wrecked, discarded, broke, or replaced with the next big thing. Pretty much worthless in the 1960's and then Vincent owners took matters into their own hands and acquired the old Vincent stock and started a Spares Company to keep the marque alive. Same story now with Mopar, Jags, Big Block Chevys etc... but in most cases reproduction parts became available in the last 20-30 years or so. Mine is a series C Shadow that I tried to buy at an auction in the mid 1970s. I was a young college professor with my pay at the bottom of the salary schedule. I still had 4 thousand dollars squirreled away and I thought I had a good chance to win the Vincent. I recall that it sold for several hundred dollars more than my budget allowed. I kept track of the Vincent for the next 20 years and would occasionally ask the winning bidder if he might consider selling the bike to me..He always declined. Finally, I saw him at a classic bike event and he answered me with a possible yes. I told him he could double his money and he smiled and told me it would be worse than that. we finally agreed on something less than $20,000. I had a good equity line on my home and scrambled out to San Francisco from my home in Idaho and bought the bike. I started a restoration and got in contact with Herb Harris in Texas, sent him some pictures and he called me back and said If I wanted a restored one, he would trade me a show bike for the old low mile original. His strong statement of \"don't restore that bike\" was advice well taken. I went through the basics of making it run and making it reliable. 2 months after I rode it for the first time it had run in 40 years, I packed it up and ran it at the Bonneville Salt Flats. I set a somewhat embarrassing record at about 105MPH. This was for a 100% original vintage pushrod bike in the 1000CC class. The record still stands after 20 years, I still ride and enjoy the Vincent. These motorcycles are icons but the owners of them for the most part are not fanatics about originality, we like to ride them. It doe's need a BTH electronic magneto.
