I had my local dealer's paint guy look at them and he says they appear to be from tree sap. This era of Continental will give a Lexus 400 or 430 a run for it's money. They drive incredibly well. And this Lincoln has a timing chain instead of a timing belt, as in the case of the earlier Lexus'. And no starter under the intake manifold, like the Lexus, or leaky capacitors in the ECU, like some Lexus' and other Toyota products suffered from during these years. Indeed, Wixom Assembly, where this fine motor car was built, had a lower defect rate than Lexus during these years. American Craftsmen who took pride in their work, and this Lincoln illustrates that pride. Of course some maintenance items might cost more to maintain. In this case it is worth it for the driving experience and enjoyment. Not everyone wants to drive a Chevy Cobalt or a Honda Civic. The biggest problem I had was the cars main ECU. It started to malfunction and it would leave me stranded but the check engine light never came on. I replaced all sorts of parts and then finally good mechanic told me that it was the ECU and I had a rebuilt because Lexus wanted a small fortune for it. You really don't want the Japanese cars when they get older because they're designed to be very reliable for about 15 years because in their country they do not keep cars very long. Their government gives great incentives to buy new cars -- well from a tax incentive that is. Most of their cars go to other Asian Islands. The leather did not stand up very well either. I had a 1986 Toyota Cressida that was initially very reliable but near the end was extremely problematic including multiple oil leaks and a rear axle that became so loud that I had to sell the car. They don't fair very well for rust either. I'm not trying to bash Toyota and Lexus products because they do make great products it's just that age is not one of their strong points in my opinion and like I said after owning two of their flagship sedans. Oh by the way my Lexus gauge cluster went dark and I had to have the electronics rebuilt. I sold the LS400 with 97,000 MI and I sold the Cressida with 119,000 miles.
