My '07 MCoupe at 86k is similar, bought it bone stock and did only mild upgrades like replacing the shocks, struts, bushings, and a bigger front swaybar. That's all this one should get too.\r\n Has anyone else noticed that in all the reviews and ads for the new BMW Z4, they compare alongside any other Z car and other vintage hi-po except the Z4M Coupe? Wonder why? Because this is the real thing, while the new Z4 is only an overweight 4 series with the rear seat chopped out. No turbos, a real ignition key, real no-excuses non-electronic real solid street, track and autocross ready suspension, vicious engine, seemingly instantaneous steering response, instant on lag-free throttle response in sport mode, and 200# lighter than that bloat-mobile that's BMW's sad excuse for a new Z4 compared to this one. So BMW deliberately avoids comparisons with the the new Z4 to this one, because this one will win.\r\nIts refreshing, seriously really refreshing, to see another MCoupe that a previous owner didn't slam coilovers into and lower. The bodywork is already so low right from the factory that any lower guarantees curb and driveway scraping. Suspension height is dead on where I would set it if I started with a non-M and was setting it up as a street machine. Part of BMW lowering the suspension that much from the non-M is using 26\" tall tires, allowing BMW to lower the suspension ~ 3/4\" lower than the non-M sport, and ~1\" lower than non-M Z4 already, then the taller tires bring the body height back up enough to clear speed bumps and (some) curbs.\r\nFrom the factory, the suspension is already an //M among //M cars. The front control arms are already horizontal, and rears are just a tick above. Removing the thinner of the two spring pads on the rear springs is the only little tick of lowering the car might want. Factory spring rates are already as tight as I would want on a street car.\r\nOriginal struts and shocks have softened by now, could use replacing. Engine Vanos will still be strong. This is actually a 350hp engine with the Siemens controller, unique and only available with the Z4M, vs the Bosch controller version of Z3 and E46 S54 engines. BMW then put a restrictor baffle into the air filter box that restricts airflow. Snapping out the baffle and removing the screens regains the ~6% power lost from these artificial restrictions, as measured by MAF flow increase on two Z4M S54 engines I've measured.\r\nAlso this engine has all the latest factory rod bearings and Vanos hub bolts. Since this car needs new tires anyway, and these tend not to get a lot of miles, get a set or them or Dunlop ZIII or BFG Rivals. If you're going to spend ~$38k or so for a very special out of the ordinary rare BMW, then go for the sticky rubber like buying life insurance for the car. You'll love the improvement how these tires bring out so much more of what a Z4 M Coupe can give you every time to turn the steering wheel and step on the gas. And up the width to 245/40 on the front instead of those banana peel 225's, and 275/35 on the rear.\r\nDon't go cheap on the struts and shocks. Bilstein makes direct replacement struts for these. On the rear, splurge ~$600 for Viking dual adjustable with regressive valving. Far better ride control and adjustability than the same cost for only Koni Dual Adjustable which only have standard valving.\r\nCombined with good sticky rubber, these shocks are the best and only secure way to keep that tail glued to the road as long as you don't try to evade the laws of physics altogether.\r\n This Z4M Coupe should go for ~$35 - $40k, more than enough for a healthy down payment on a new Z4 instead. Not a lot of fuss in the interior to distract the driver, yet enough gadgetry -- mostly doing its work in the background -- to provide modern levels of comfort, sound, and connectivity (but bring your smartphone). Throaty S54 exhaust competing with the mechanical noises underhood for one's ears. BIG brakes. Old school tail happiness if one so chooses. Sufficient comfort to get to and from the fun places where cars like this shine. I suppose if one were to compare lap times with a Cayman S that car might win out. I swore off the Michelin PSS after an uneasy spinout that would have been sure-footed when the tires were new. For how relatively few miles these cars are driven compared to a daily driver commuter car, its a no brainer, to me, to go with the stickiest I can get. My current RE-71R have ~6k miles and 50 autocross runs, and are at about half tread. A previous M Roadster had Dunlop ZII, that lasted 25k+ street miles, no autocross.\r\n\"Tightened up\" on these needs only Koni or Bilstein front and rear, fresh, BMW factor OE rubber suspension bushings and mounts, BMW OE rear swaybar links, Meyle HD front swaybar links and upper rear shock mounts, and, IMHO, UUC Enforcer type transmission mounts. Definitely replace the RTABs if more than 50k miles, to bring back straight line stability on WOT acceleration. If you splurge for dual adjustable shocks, then definitely go with the Vikings, another level of ride comfort and stability over the Koni DA.\r\nAs WDB says, the brakes are already BIG compared to the car's weight.\r\nThe Coupes only, also come with the fastest ratio of the steering racks found on any E30/36/46/Z4 model.\r\nH&R's big mofo of a 31mm front adjustable swaybar will transform the car's handling without needing spring changes or excessive lowering. Aftermarket shim sets cost 20% of the BMW OE shims. Also buy two of the magnetic shim inserter tool, one for a spare in case you misplace or break one while in the middle of an adjustment.\r\nThe Vanos is nothing magic, no different than any or the M52-S52 or M54 engines. Just remember to clean the little Vanos oil filter screen that's in the front of the head, takes another 10 minutes or less each time you change the oil. Most people don't do this, so do replace it on this one soon as you get the car.\r\nFront suspension is like E36 struts on E46 arms and LCABs. I use E36 strut tubes with E36 Koni strut inserts on mine instead of E85/6 specific struts. Rear suspension bushings are the same as E36-46, so np there either.\r\nIf in California, the only quirk is that you're required to keep the section 2 cat in place, while you're allowed to remove it on the E46.\r\nWhat would it take for me to sell my E86? Well... Would consider trading for a Z1 that I would then swap an S54 into. First time poster here. I have owned a 2006 Z4M coupe for the past 4 years. I sought out my coupe as a 2nd car to enjoy in the summer months. I wanted 1) a sports car; 2) something you don\u2019t see every day; 3) a brand I had some familiarity with; 4) safe (modern equipment like ABS, airbags); and 5) something I could work on myself (I\u2019ve worked on my own cars since my first - a 1977 MGB purchased in 1989 when I was 15yo). The Z4M Coupe has fit the bill and then some. The car is a masterpiece of engineering and design. It\u2019s not perfect but in my time owning I have loved almost every minute of it. Yes there have been a couple surprises along the way, but nothing that couldn\u2019t be fixed. The Z4M is a classic, individual throttle bodies, 3.2L straight six naturally aspirated (the legendary S54 motor), 8,000 RPM redline, 6spd manual (no automatics) only 1,815 made for North America, near 50/50 front rear weight distribution (for a car with a cast iron block!), limited slip diff, enough electrical stuff to be comfortable but not overbearing. An experienced driver can do 0-60 in 5 seconds (officially rated at 4.8). The car handles the turns beautifully, though as many have noted on other boards the ride is stiff. The sound of the engine is almost indescribable - I\u2019ve read it described as a symphony of metal and that\u2019s about right with 24 valves, mechanical lifters, DOHC and variable valve timing for both cams. Too much fun to list - I could go on for hours. For those who are mechanically inclined it\u2019s not hard to work on. With claims that some sellers make about low miles on these, if it seems too good to be true, then it is.\r\nAlso, the seller could post compression test numbers too, in case there might be any doubt about the engines integrity.\r\nOn my '07, that also has 86k miles, my compression is as new, with only 6 psi variation between cylinders. Twice.\r\n\r\nHe gets out of the M. \u201cNice car, but if you want to see fast let me get my car. The car I won championships with, I\u2019ll show you a lap.\u201d So he did. This means a more direct connection from spring to the car's weight without the rubber compression and stretch of other BMW strut mounts You won't wear out this style of strut mount and spring support because only the strut shaft is connected through the rubber. So road vibration is still dampened.\r\nRear springs are from the same spring grouping as other BMW rear barrel shaped springs. On the Z3M, the Z3 rear gets the same ride height with Z4M springs without rubber spring pads, as the Z3M's stock rear springs with its spring pads.\r\nZ43M stock struts and shocks are also valved nice and firm versus stock struts and springs on other M cars too.
