He saw a loop hole in the IMSA rules for this series and the new straight 6 M3 would have a chance at beating the Mustangs and Camaros. \r\n\r\nSo, the question is how many European cars did we get that were homologated for a US series? Also, the fact that the special parts needed for homologation were stuffed in the trunk and had to be installed by BMW's North America Racing division, PTG/Tom Milner. This harkened to the days of the L88 Corvette and its infamous \"trunk kit.\" Unfortunately, many of these cars that were sold through the dealerships languished in the showrooms for over a year until they were heavily discounted. Remember, they were built in two runs of August and October of 1995. Meanwhile, the new OBDII 3.2L motor M3 (1996 model year) was already in the showroom at about the same price, but heavily optioned. Customers did not want an M3 without A/C or radio let alone the sky high wing that looked like it was installed by a Home Depot trainee.\r\n\r\nRumor has it that these super late production '95s were due to the fact that BMW hand-picked the highest hp output units from the entire production run and saved them for the LTWs. I've personally seen 4 LTWs on dyno runs back in the late 90's and they consistently put down 10-20 rwhp more than the regular '95 M3s. Ultimately, when I was club racing with the BMWCCA in the early 2000's, there were about half a dozen LTWs club racing as they were picked up so cheap from the dealers who were desperate to unload them. Of the 126 built, the question is how many were not tracked and still have original paint? 2 or 3 dozen at best? On paper, these cars don\u2019t\u2019 sound that much different. All about the weight. Yes, you can take weight out of a standard US spec e36M3 and create what the factory did in terms of driving feel. I'd add that the aero bits on the LTW are also needed to experience the intended result.\r\n\r\nI used to own a '95 M3 in white. I removed weight in much the same places the factory did on the LTW although I had a sunroof penalty I offset with some other weight reduction in seats and exhaust. I also changed gearing and the car was so much more alive on the track. All this to say that you can start with something and modify to achieve what the factory did in the LTW. But you won't achieve the smiles from exclusivity by doing so, just the grins from performance. Relative valuations of those smiles vary from person to person. I still miss that e36 M3, it was a hoot to drive. I've since owned more of them but none matched the feel of the '95 with reduced weight and a track-focused bend. \r\nGood luck with this auction, a great example of the car here and clearly enthusiast owned.
