While the concept of the true stick shift vs. an F1 type is appealing, The Vanquish was never designed to take a stick and not everyone who has driven one is happy with the ergonomics. As the owner of a stock \"S\" I can attest to the benefits of the original setup. Sadly the early cars did have issues with the transmission but those were all fixed by the time the S came along. Aston Martin changed from hydraulic gear selectors to electronic selectors, but my mechanic has seen both styles fail in equal numbers. The \"S\" also has a slightly better clutch (which you can bolt into the older cars), but it doesn't really solve anything. If you want to \"fix\" these you need to go with a twin plate clutch and an upgraded ASM pump. Also, I think everyone has had a fuel pump fail...so make sure they have been updated. The biggest single improvement came with the introduction of the magnetic gear position sensors when the S was introduced (though apparently a very small number of S models were built before the change). The magnetic sensors replaced the earlier mechanical potentiometer gear position sensors, which wear and then cause the real problems \u2014 which largely caused the persistent reputation that the system is terrible. Properly set up, it\u2019s so much better than that. The magnetic sensors don\u2019t wear. There was NO change to the gear selectors \u2014 gear changing was always electrohydraulic. Your mechanic may be unique in believing the later system fails as often as the early one \u2014 that is certainly not what most have experienced. The S clutch is improved and works just fine. \n\nOn a different note, the market for the Vanquish is very different from the market for the Vanquish S.
