This was gonna be my posting:\r\n\r\nIn August of 2018 I test drove this car with 265.300 kilometer on the odo and documented it as well as its partly stamped service book.\r\n\r\nI had contact with the then seller in Nuremberg since May of 2018 when the car was first advertised on Mobile.de. He said he was the third owner and bought the car eight years prior. The M5 was mistakenly offered as being from 1996. What I learned about this E34 from the dialogue with the seller, together with the asking price, made that I was not in a hurry. When it was still for sale in August that year and I happened to be in the neighborhood, I decided to give the car a chance anyway.\r\n\r\nAccording to the Nuremberg seller he bought the M5 from the 2nd owner (but since he never registered the car, technically he offered it as a second owner example too). However I never got to the point where I wanted to see the title, so I can\u2019t verify the number of owners. When \u2018Nuremberg\u2019 bought the M5 in 2010 it was already partially repainted. Because of this, he couldn\u2019t tell me if it had accident damage prior to his purchase. The owner stated he bought it as \u2018accident free\u2019 and according to him the car didn\u2019t look like it had been in an accident.\r\n\r\nThe seller owned a body shop and had rust removed and some sheet metal replaced at various points (the door, at least one \u2013 rear \u2013 shock tower and wheel surround and both front fenders) after he bought it. Following this bodywork, the car got a complete paint job. Nuremberg also told me he had removed the roof rails and added a sports exhaust, but had kept all the originals of these. According to him further work done was: the complete brakes and replacing the steering wheel, the headliner and various parts of the chassis. However nothing could be backed up by any documents. Regarding the engine he even spoke of a rebuild, although here also he couldn\u2019t present any invoices or any other proof of work done. He said the gearbox and diff hadn\u2019t needed anything.\r\n\r\nDuring my test drive the odo was at 265.300 kilometers. The car drove very good, with tight steering and enough power, but the engine was a little rough at idle. For a car that's now 27 years old, that's actually not bad at all. You have to remember that these were cars that were used. Many (mine included) even came with trailer hitches. You didn't buy a touring to have for a weekend car. It's a truck. Plus its a 1 of 1 in the color combo, already in the US where it is very rare and everything that's physically wrong with the car (you can see several things in the photos) can be fixed. The seller denied having Facebook and now knowing that they are in fact two different people, that's fine, but there is an affiliation here and It's clear to see where the confusion comes from. After the denial, then a purge of all E34 Touring content from Facebook commences. Coincidence? This was my concern yesterday that I expressed! I will still leave the car at NO RESERVE and let it sell as it will, and whoever ends up with this car will be extremely lucky as it\u2019s in truly excellent working condition and visually beautiful. It can pretty clearly be seen in the photos and also at 0:32ish in the walk-around video. Since you have an E34 touring - in white - you know that they're a pretty well-put-together car and the gaps and body lines match up well from panel to panel - better than just about any other BMW before it. I've owned several E34 tourings myself and currently have an M5T. The left side of this car looks fine. I could nitpick some of the fitment in the front but it's all adjustable and we are dealing with a car that's been repainted (and acknowledged as such, so no argument there) so I can't say what was taken apart etc. Presents well enough in my opinion. Look at the left side of the car and you see nice gaps, the body line lines up well from fender to door to door to quarter. Decent gap between the quarter and the bumper and the tailgate sits properly and lines up well to the left quarter. The bumper is clearly level since it follows the tailgate line well. Also, were the tailgate not to be level, you'd have some gap problems on the left. As you get to the right, you notice that the quarter is actually sitting quite proud of the tailgate. You'd initially think that the tailgate is actually lower but it doesn't appear that way. Come around to the right side and you'll see the gaps are a little tighter in the doors and fenders, but they line up well. The right rear door has a nice even horizontal gaps top and bottom, however, the door doesn't match up with the body line on the quarter which is noticeably lower. Looking straight on at the car from the right side, you will see that the gap from the quarter to bumper actually diverges from the wheel arch to the rear of the car. in the video and shots from the 3/4 rear angle you can see the gap in the center of the rear door to quarter actually widens and there is a sag in the body line. So basically the rest of the car are employees getting W-2s, but the right rear quarter is an independent contractor that just got his 1099. Industry terms. Sorry for the confusion.\n\nAlso, @E30S54, I wouldn't suggest anything should sour you from listing a car here. These aren't mere accusations. Had I not had a preponderance of historical evidence regarding the mileage on this and the other two tourings listed elsewhere, I wouldn't have said anything. We even have a first hand account from a member (who has used BaT himself to list cars) who has driven this very car and inspected it himself. A simple Google search of the last 7 of the VIN reveals the same information. On top of that there is an ad from April 2019 (which oddly is six months after the date on the invoice provided by the seller) from the same dealer that the photos in the bmwmregistry listing came from. We are fortunate that there have been people in the community that track the locations and sales of these cars. I would like to think that people would want to get the opinions (positive or negative) of people that intimately know these cars. CA of course has different rules. and if you want to import a car prior to the 25 years, you can do that.\r\n\r\npeople have been importing 3.8L M5s into the US for more than 15 years, closer to 20 in fact. this has included both non-CA and CA registration. because so many other cars have gone before, the path is well trod and without pitfalls. \r\n\r\nbecause there were (relatively) minimal functional differences between US and Euro spec cars, once the first person had processed a car through a Registered Importer, anyone who followed just had to follow that script. it still wasn't cheap at $5-10k, but part of that was just due to the RIs having a captive market. however, when you could buy a nice 3.8L euro car for $25k and pay maybe another $15k total to ship, import & certify, you still had a very cool car for $40k. there weren't hundreds of cars imported this way, but more than 50 I'm sure.\r\n\r\nbecause the emissions regulations at the time in Europe were relatively close to those in the US, I believe the certification of the B38 powertrain for the US didn't require any hardware changes to the car, just the cost (paid by the early adopters) of the certification work (running the car on a dyno across the EPA's test protocol to measure the emissions). after that, everyone else just points and says \"mine is like that one. it has all the same parts and tests the same on the emissions test cycle. it's warmed up and ready to test.\"\r\n\r\nI'm not familiar with exact specifics of the CARB process, but my understanding is that the situation is broadly the same as the pre-25 year/non-CA certification process. demonstrate that your car is the same as the already defined (and CARB-tested, at the same big $ amount, but done by someone else first) model which is on the books, then demonstrate that your car tests within the defined parameters which the state already has on the books for the model. hey presto, you have a CARB sticker and you're good to go.\r\n\r\nthis is effectively no difference than the work which has to be done to get a CARB sticker for an S50-swapped E30. show that it has the parts that CARB want you to have, run on the rollers, pass the test, get the sticker. it's never _that_ easy of course, but there's no worries about this particular model as it's been done before.\r\n\r\nthere's a very slight chance that the CA DMV computer isn't smart enough to differentiate between the non-US and US VIN for an '92 built car, but it should be. if it isn't and the car is running right, it will likely pass the sniff test and that'd be that. assuming the testing station wasn't smart enough to notice that the engine looks slightly different.", "likes": 1, "timestamp": 1581733778, "type": "comment"}, {"id": 4145823, "authorName": "Christopher_Kohler", "authorUrl": "https://bringatrailer.com/member/christopher_kohler/", "bidAmount": 0, "content": "No one needs to explain the 25 year rule to me. I imported my own M5 Touring in July and also posted about my experience with helpful information on BaT. None of that applies to California though but it\u2019s been done so many times there\u2019s a path forward and I\u2019m sure the seller will get the guidance he needs. It came in through New Orleans..I had it shipped to LA and had been assured it could easily be converted to EPA and DOT specs. Not so. I spent a year and a significant amount of money getting the DOT conversions completed...[ new doors with side impact protections, bumper rebuilds to meet the 5MPH requirement , US headlights etc.} It turned out that the EPA changes would cost me $5000 and 50HP...so I did what one of the commenters here suggested......bought land in Idaho, built a new home there and took it to Sun Valley and easily registered it. It was a wonderful car, very fast, 4spd stick shift, good fuel mileage and it even did pass the California Smog,,,,\"sniff test\" even though it had zero emissions equipment...\r\nKept it for 30 years and loved every drive. Now I live back in California and had to sell this car. I ended up selling it to a person in Georgia where this vintage is acceptable with no emissions equipment...in California it is impossible to register an original Grey market car..even if it completely passes the sniff tests. I had lots of fun in Idaho and spent many winters skiing 70 or 80 days.
