While one of the Italians was laid up with a chronic mix of leaking electrons and something mechanical not meching I really needed a ride. A junkyard I frequented had one of these that had gotten stuck in some snow on the side of the road. The snow plows had managed to break the window while plowing and filled it with snow and sand, and the hazards had run the battery dead. The price was $50. I asked if I could jump start it before buying it, and it fired right up. The yard guy started having second thoughts over the price then, but I still managed to get it out at the original deal. \n\nIt took a lot of cleanup, and I really only planned to drive it for a few weeks until I could get the 'cool' car working again. There was a girl around at the time who thought the Honda was a much better ride than the leaky brit, so it got to stay for a while. Eventually the girl moved on, but I had come to enjoy things like the car starting reliably without having to lift the bonnet to mess with something, the windows going up and down and sealing when up, a defroster that would clear the windshield (and side windows too), and headlights that would come on when the switch was flipped without blowing the fuse and also simultaneously providing light for the road ahead. The seats were amazing, the shifter was a precise, everything just worked. It gave me a whole new appreciation for what a car should be. I eventually traded it for a CRX, and wound up being a Honda fan for many years. Eventually they succumbed to market forces and wound up with more accountants than engineers running the company. Took delivery on Valentines Day 1984. Kept that car for 12 years and 160K miles. Living in the upper Midwest, I had to put Pirelli snow shoes on it, after which it was fine in snow. \r\n\r\nThese pre-fuel injection engines don\u2019t like 20F below weather, but that should not be a problem to the new owner. Anything above +25F was no problem. The guy I sold it to called me after he and his wife put on an additional 120K - said his goal was to roll over 300,000 miles. For the 2d generation ('83-'87) cars, it was notably the suspension -- the unequal-wishbone design on the front not only migrated to all four corners of the later cars, but to pretty much everything Honda built through the early '00s. \r\n\r\n@RWD-FTW - in 1984, Car and Driver ran a series of handling tests, and rated the Prelude second only to the Porsche 944. The 2d gen Prelude also became the first Honda to participate in IMSA racing, with King Motorsports. Given the continent-spanning mileage I put on my '84 (not to mention the cone marks from years of autocross), definitely a capable GT. \r\n\r\nThese cars didn't get cruise control until the '85 Prelude Si. In my area to buy a Prelude like this (or a CRX, for instance), people waited 4 to 6 months when they were new. The second generation Prelude (1982-1987) was also the most popular; it outsold the third, fourth, and fifth generations combined. The number of views and watchers on this listing tells the tale. Many of us remember these fondly as a car we could aspire to without spending silly money. Second generation Preludes are rare in any condition\u2014and much more so in such fine condition as this one. I helped sell a red 1985 Prelude automatic brand new back in the Brad-Barker-Honda earlier days to a work colleague. I begged her to 'learn stick' but wanted the auto. Still, few survivors of this 2nd-gen (and first 'modern/Americanized' Prelude) which was just an incredible transition from the first small original true Japanese designed Prelude that came in in 1979 (my 2nd car actually... and my 3rd was a red 1983.5 Prelude 2nd gen just like this, but with the 5-speed stick, which until 1984 model year, had manual steering! (the auto had power steering that 1st half year though). Really great cars. Double wishbone front suspension gave it a nice hunkered down feel on off-ramps. The dual side-draft carburetors helped to achieve the nice low hood-line too. Even with the automatic, this car should go for a lot more, so we will see tomorrow. 'Bardndoor4' is right, someone will get a very cool car tomorrow. When you see these on the road in person (rare now days) they are pretty dramatic in their size and low hood-line along with the nearly extinct middle size (and up) coupe layout. Honda also nailed the shade of red too. Agreed that this is a killer deal even if it's admittedly not either an Si or 5-speed.\r\n\r\nI have one question for the seller, if they're still here, and it's slightly nitpicky: how did you managed to obtain those specific license plates? (all the more so considering the vehicle wasn't relocated to Texas until 2009) Just to provide some background info for y'all non-Texans: the state celebrated its sesquicentennial (150th) anniversary of its independence from Mexico in 1986, and it resulted in the first \"commemorative plates\" Texas ever introduced. (Its previous plates simply had the state name and specific plate number; on these you can see an outline of the state plus the phrasing \"1836-1986 Texas Sesquicentennial\" in the middle.) IIRC every car sold in the state around that time got the plates by default.\r\n\r\nThat said, I don't think the plates are valid today \u2013 or am I mistaken? Texas mandates the replacement of existing license plates roughly every 8-10 years \u2013 every vehicle owner in the state gets mailed new ones every so often \u2013 and the former plates are rendered obsolete. All non-customized Texas plates now have seven characters; the final six-character ones were issued over a decade ago now. More intriguingly, these particular plates have an expiration sticker showing April 1986! Nowadays Texas issues only a single windshield sticker that doubles as indicative of both an annual vehicle permit as well as an inspection \u2013 you can't get a new one each year without first having a standard, 20-point inspection \u2013 but the stickers includes the full plate names on them. \r\n\r\nTexas has specific \"vintage car\" plates, but they're current-issue, not *actual* vintage, and I've only seen them on pre-1980 cars. Nowadays it also issues \"faux-vintage\" plates somewhat similar to how New York has done it with reissuing the style with the orange background on them, or California's black-background-yellow-lettering ones. Still, AFAIK all such plates are recent-issue, and there's no way to \"reissue\" any specific expired tag. I found the plates online, with stickers layered to 89. I peeled off the stickers down the 86, and got lucky they were in good shape. The process for using these plates is easy. I took them to the DMV for inspection and to make sure the character sequence is available. I had to change my registration from normal to \"classic\" registration. Classic means I still use two plates, and a windshield sticker. The stickers on the plate are only on for looks. Although, I was able to get a new windshield sticker to match the April sticker on the plate. Texas DMV has a catalog of old plate styles, and they make sure the year of the car matches the plates that came out at the time.
