So much of the beauty of the design is the shape of the windows and the smokey glass contrasted against white paint really shows off the design, where the darker colors just seem to all meld together with the glass to the detriment of the lines. Make no mistake, I like all the other colors too, but I really do have a preference for this color scheme. To me, for the 240Z, 1972 is the sweet spot, embodying several refinements over the earlier cars, that improved the car both functionally and aesthetically. I know the early cars are all the rage right now, despite the recognition that there was plenty of room for improvement and that improvement came in 1972. There's a reason the vents under the rear window were deleted. And there's a reason the rear window defroster elements went from vertical to horizontal, just as there's a reason for the placement of the bumper overriders which in 1972, unlike 1973, framed the grill by being positioned on each end.\nWhere model year 1973 saw the introduction of inferior carbs and an engine that suffered under the burden of more stringent emissions constraints, the 1972 powerplant is joyous. I\u2019m just guessing, but I think it has something to do with which one said persons own or owned in the past. Kind of a way of validating our choice. Personally, I think the number one factor that draws people to these wonderful cars is the body design. To the vast majority they all pretty much look the same. When I was in the market for a 240Z I looked at several examples from different years. To my untrained eye they all were pretty much the same except for colors, interior/exterior. What I wanted was the best Z I could afford at the time. I actually settled on a car with a color I didn\u2019t like but was mechanically sound with a good interior condition. I figured I could paint it later to my own taste. I ended up with a \u201c series one\u201d car, a term I had no knowledge of back then but I would have bought any number of 72 models but they were more money at the time. At least the ones I looked at. After many years of ownership and lots of $ spent remaking the car into my own I\u2019ve learned a lot of the little differences that were made over the production of the 240 as well as the later models. My experience is similar. In 1972 I moved onto a cul de sac with my new young wife and a recently purchased brand new Toyota Celica ST. My neighbor across the way, with whom we quickly made friends, was a private investigator named Al Bedford. Al had a 1972 240Z in brown with the butterscotch interior. He had bought it new and it was beautiful. I immediately fell in love with it and was so excited to drive it when he threw me the keys. I subsequently decided to buy one and the search led me to what would be my first of four 240Zs. It was a 1972 lime green metallic car with a butterscotch interior. It had 51,000 miles. I ultimately put 40,000 more miles on it before moving on but that car informed all of my purchases going forward. It was such a great car. A couple of footnotes: Al Bedford authored a book called The Wheel, which was an account of a famous local murder case he solved. The notoriety he achieved by that success led to a friendship with a local celebrity who raced 240Zs with Bob Sharp. His friend's name was Paul Newman. As a young fellow just starting out, I didn't have the money sufficient to join Al's invitations to get into racing so I contented myself to exploits in my 240Z on interstate I95 where I was nominated for many awards by the state police that were subsequently given to me in traffic court.
