The answer was the aftermarket, Rickman as seen here & Seeley. When I look at this with the Rickman frame & bodywork, I am reminded of a \u201972 Norton Dunstall 810 I once owned. The front disc brakes are much the same design but the Dunstall had calipers on both front forks, mine had a five speed Quaife gear set & the Boranni rims. Bodywork is also similar. The big difference is that this Kawasaki engine was not as \u201cexplosive\u201d as the modified Norton unit! I can only imagine how this machine would handle on a twisty two lane stretch of blacktop. Plenty of power on tap too. My friend worked there and would occasionally show up with a test Rickman. Incredible bikes, light, great handling and style. The nickel plated Reynolds frames were the icing on the cake(just like my racing road bicycles!). As a result I ended up with a few Rickmans-a 250 with a Montessa engine and a 125MX with the awesome Zundap! These were, IMO, the best dirt bikes around and with their lightweight and stellar handling, even a weekend warrior like myself could have a ball on them. I sold them not too long ago-and regret it. But what I was really interested in was Cheney's shop his kits were strictly competition dirt bikes. I wanted one to drop my BSA single into. In that era most dirt bikes were just street bikes with all the start junk pulled of, so a well setup Cheney would have been very competitive. Another place we visited was the Greves factory. It was like stepping into the dawn of the industrial revolution. It was hard to imagine that they could produce motorcycles with the equipment they had, although buying Villiers engines certainly made it a lot easier.\r\n\r\nThe biggest surprise was the Husqvarna factory in Sweden. I didn\u2019t know anything about Husky other than they made really sweet handling bikes. Imagine my surprise when we drove up to a huge industrial complex that made everything from guns to water heaters to chainsaws. What a bike! The first time I really pinned the throttle, it felt like it would pull my arms off. Of course, that's in retrospect, since I've owned many more bikes with much more power and have become used to performance that would have been unbelievable then. But it was a quantum leap beyond the other street bikes of that time. Still, when I hear that motor--the way the cams yank the valves open gives it a unique sound--it still stirs me.
