This was an expensive car. It may have been the fastest sedan of the time period. They offered a less expensive version with vinyl seats and a 2.5 liter motor in the 2500. Max Hoffman had BMW create a new car that was sort of a mix of the two, the Bavaria, which had the 2800 engine and drivetrain and leather seats, but not as much leather and missing a few of the amenities of the 2800 but priced closer to the 2500. Over the space in which the motor lives is supposed to be a metal plate to keep debris out.\n\nThe AC blower lives in the dashboard behind the twin-knob control panel you see ahead of the shifter. That unit is separate from the heater box itself. Indeed, it operates as a separate unit. These woulda cost about $7k new; the original tag line for the \u201871 Bavaria 2.8L was \u201cSix cylinders! 130 mph! $4995! Wunderkar!\u201d The Blue Max, my bought-new, still-got \u201872 Bav 3.0 stickered around $7k with its optional power steering, a/c and rear-window defogger. My offer of $6650 was IMMEDIATELY accepted at VOB Datsun/BMW in Bethesda MD and I knew I\u2019d bargained poorly. But I didn\u2019t care; I was getting my dream car. This is a very nice survivor; mine also has very little rust but does have the requisite cracked dash. The 2800 has a busier taillight cluster with a narrower spread between them and doesn\u2019t have the brushed chrome bezel between the tail lights that debuted in \u201872 Bavs. Nor does it have the Bav\u2019s chrome trim line that, to my eye, is very conspicuous by its absence. Originally it would\u2019ve had the 2800 badge now in the grille on the right rear of the trunk lid, with \u201cAutomatic\u201d across from it. The side-grilles up front went from Silver to Black on the \u201872 Bav, another nice touch. \r\n If this one still has the original, insanely-complex and non-durable fan clutch, put the \u201880s vintage viscous fan clutch on your short-list of must-haves. I do lust for the wood-rimmed Bus-sized steering wheel on the 2800s; it\u2019s sized for the manual steering and is the only thing I\u2019ve replaced in my interior with the smaller one from later 5-series. Note that in the original interior, there is not one single roundel anywhere. \r\nOne of the best things about the CS coupes is that they\u2019ve helped preserve the many matching mechanical bits for the E3s. That, and their gorgeous front end; I still contend that the front end from the windshield forward on both the CS and E3 is one of finest and most beguiling of any car ever built. \r\nSomebody grab this beauty. I'm in Florida and the A/C would require repair/upgrade (if possible) to be more functional, which factored into my bidding. Working A/C allows for more driving throughout the year once \"winter\" goes away, during the warm but not not necessarily rainy spells.
