I ran the VIN number through the OEM website and it comes up as: EUR model R75/5 manufactured 3 of 1973. \r\n\r\nI can't tell, but the date on the head plate appears to be a badly stamped 8.... maybe a 3. \r\nALL the threes on the plate are badly stamped. \r\n\r\nAlso: I have NEVER seen a serial number on the steering head gusset like this one. The original frame number is embedded in the gusset on a smooth cut surface and runs perpendicular to the ground - read from the seat of the bike. That number has clearly been added with an electric engraver - not a stamp. In fact, the entire machined flat spot is missing. \r\n\r\nI think the frame and engine match on this bike is questionable. My friend owns the twin to it he meticulously researched and restored. Both were used to compare with this bike.\r\n\r\nI enlarged the head plate photo and those number stamps are done by hand - one number at a time. They are out of alignment and over-struck, deforming the metal badly. The slash in the top MFG date appears to be done with a knife point. The number 7 after the slash is not a 'stamp'. It appears to 'constructed' from two or three separate strikes. \r\n\r\nOriginals are stamped all at once, lined up perfectly and clearly recognizable. That plate is a replacement. \r\n\r\nEvery one off the 3's on the head plate appear to be a hard-struck, double stamped 8 made to look like a messy 3. I purchased this bike from a gentleman that inherited it from his late father. I checked the numbers with the engine number and clean Michigan title. I didn't check the frame or plate. It is a correct frame 1973 LWB. I messed up the head plate trying to remove the original rivets. The rivets looked original. I tried to locate replacements but couldn't find a correct size so I used blind rivets. I did not intend for this to be a restoration. My goal is to put these 45-50-60 year old bikes back in good and presentable working order. This was a decent unmolested R75/5 with the crud and pitting that any bike sitting for 30 years would have. The splines and condition of the brakes, pistons, cylinders, valves indicate to me the 39000 miles showing is correct. I cannot explain the stampings but the frame was in original paint before I sanded and re-sprayed. Any one is welcome to check out my feedback on Ebay or my Facebook profile. However, when a bike is presented as 'matching numbers' it warrants some minimal scrutiny. \r\n\r\nSave and enlarge the head plate photo to your computer using a screenshot. I've never seen one even remotely this bad and can't believe it came from the factory that way. More suspicious is the frame stamp, which is clearly altered. The original stamp has been erased and replaced by numbers etched with an electric scribe. Nobody does that.\r\n\r\nThe frame numbers were altered to match the engine, which is backwards. Unless the buyer was a purest or collector, many folks wouldn't care if the engine number didn't match on a 50 yr old motorcycle. It may take the sell price down a bit, but it's a guess how much or little.\r\n \r\nThe Title is with the frame, not the engine. The only reason for the frame to be altered is if the bike is stolen or totaled on a previous title. It's also interesting the bike is a EURO model VIN - not a US market bike. Just for the heck of it I ran the VIN as: \r\n4008888 - no such bike. \r\n4003888 - mfg 4/73 EUR model R75/5.\r\n4003388 - mfg 3/73 EUR model R75/5\r\n4008333 - mfg 3/73 EUR model R75/5\r\n\r\nThis series appears to be made for the EURO market.\r\n\r\nFrankly, I would be very reluctant to get this bike titled in my state. The gusset number would not pass the most superficial inspection. I don't believe any /5 bikes will show as specific USA models and there is no provision for that in the RealOEM database. I also have the BMW publication from 1988 \"BMW AG Parts Service Booklet\" which includes the section \"Survey of BMW Chassis Numbers\" for cars and bikes. There is no differentiation for the /5 bikes between US and Euro VINs. That didn't start until the /6, to the best of my knowledge and sources. \r\n\r\nBoth of my /5s have the frame numbers stamped in the exact same spot as the bike offered here. Many were replaced with the H4 lens and bulb so they could see more than 20 feet at night. A bonus part for the original spares bin.\r\n\r\nThose long pants make the forks look like you hit a kurb at 100 kph. The little pocket on the right above the snap on the tool kit had a small feeler gauge for the valves. I think you can still see the imprint. Is it still in the kit? \r\n\r\nThe hand air pump under the seat is another part that got tossed or lost. Bonus.\r\n\r\nThe original carb intakes were painted silver and turned to a golden wheat color from the sun. They are really hard to find and replacements are black. \r\n\r\nMany folks don't know the green paint is original because it's so rare. The Toaster Tank was an option for that year so even more rare and desirable. My best memory of that bike was, on a 380 mile Bob's BMW group ride into the hills and valleys of rural Virginia, following my buddy on the Toaster, he went out front and unwittingly passed an unmarked Trooper at over 100mph - with me in tow. Later, one of the riders in the group, trying to keep up with Mike on a tight lefty (and in a little over his head), cartwheeled his brand new R1100 into a cornfield, learning the lesson: If you don't know the rider, be careful when you try to follow. Also how a properly tuned engine will operate, a true owner and mechanic I must congrat this owner as a person who also respects machinery. Not like the revving a cold engine over 3,000 rpms running on one cylinder, talk about cold start wearplus cringe factor. Notice how it was a true cold engine not a hand on the header shown as cold by how the engine responded on this startup.\r\nOn fuel enrichment it fired right up running evenly on both cylinders, started to sound overly rich, fuel enrichment lever was slowly closed then the idle smoothed out and slightly increased. When fully closed the idle dropped down a little as the engine was running slightly lean being not near operating temp not fully warmed up. Once warmed up to operating temp the engine idle mixture will be correct as the fuel air ratio adjustment was set for the engine at normal operating temp along with a slight increase in idle rpms the result of decreased oil resistance by engine heat.
