My exact beliefs, that I mentioned on a Trans Am listed here a few years back with the HO/5 speed combo. In 1986 I took in trade the twin in equipment (305 HO/5 speed) to this car except in bright red and on my very first test drive I can remember thinking to myself \"ya, performance is back in America!\". With that mild camshaft rough idle, the bog from the Quadra-Jet secondaries when hitting that pedal on the right as hard as possible, I fell madly in love with my '84 on the first run through the gears. And @PhilipSparsoe (the seller) agreed, while the tuned port injection 305 (a 5.0 litre version of the Corvette L98) was certainly more up to date and a better setup than a carbureted (sic?) engine, I couldn't hear any \"lope\" to the camshaft in it versus my High Output 305. The fuel injected version just didn't have that old school soul like the L69. I immediately put on a brand new set of 16\" Ronals with the five black spokes and polished lips (a blatant rip off of the Porsche 911 Fuchs) and as wide as possible Gatorbacks, making it a total joy to own. When My boss and I took it (\"out west of town\") for a shakedown run and we could only get a disappointing 115 mph flat out, we're at a horsepower sapping 4200 foot altitude not helping matters. Off it went to a famous drag racer/tuner in our town who tuned it on a dyno and on the next run it was a different car all together. We clipped off a 135 mph pass before we had to shut it down do to traffic. Not bad in those days. That's quite a difference with just a tune up but I think it got the engine \"up on the cam\" where all the power was. My car also had the same deluxe interior as this one and if I bought another one I couldn't live with anything else. It's just a really nice job by Chevrolet. Mine was sans the T-Tops, so the car was ordered just how I would have done it myself. I'm in the car business and so I've truly driven thousands of cars and owned hundreds and that car was in my top six owned cars of all time. And I've owned many that were much more expensive including cars from America, Japan, Italy and Germany. It was the number one rated handling car built in America in it's time, fast, comfortable, reliable and an all around satisfying car to drive on a day in, day out basis. The car was traded in on a new MR2 at the Toyota dealership I worked at and the gentleman was back two days later asking to get out of the deal, I now know how he felt while wishing I could own this beautiful Chevrolet. This is a very nice example, well equipped and the last of the hi-po carbureted small blocks. In '82 and '83, you had the LU5 Cross-Fire fuel injected 305 V8 that was rated at 165hp. The LU5 was such a problematic setup on the Camaro, that late 1983 brought about the 190hp L69 305 HO carbureted V8. The L69 was the top performer in late '83 and all of '84. In 1985, GM came out with the LB9 TPI 305 fuel injected V8 rated at 215hp. So now there were two choices of top engines, the carbureted L69 at 190hp or the fuel injected LB9 at 215hp. The LB9 was basically a replacement for the L69 as it went away in 1985, with a few carryovers into '86, leaving only the base LG4, or the Tuned port injected LB9 for the remainder of '86.\r\n\r\nTo summarize, the L69 was the best engine you could get in a Z28 if you wanted a carburetor. I bought it in '85 as a GM \"Pep car\", ie, exec owned. I'm glad to see them get some love finally. Here's the thing about early fuel injected cars compared to late carb cars: the FI cars weren't calibrated all that well. I worked for AC Spark Plug engineering (a GM division), and had access to test cars. I was thinking of upgrading so I took my '84 L69 and a '86 TPI car and drove them back to back on the same roads / same day. The drivability of the '84 was noticeably better. It accelerated smoothly and it picked up the throttle faster and without the lag of the FI car. Those were early days of calibrating, and the fueling transitions were not worked out yet. Each subsequent year I noticed improvements. Just an observation. A quadrajet if set up right can provide great fueling. Get the book and experiment a bit. The L69 is a great motor. I autocrossed mine for a while and one time the F production national champ drove me for an instructional lap in it, and stock with A008's, he said it was a very balanced car. L69's rev easily, which is partially due to having a special lightweight flywheel, 13 lbs, IIRC. The '84 Camaro achieved its handling prowess the old fashioned way, with stiff springs, hard shocks and big bars. I don't know about the shocks (not \"IROC\") on this car, but with those big thin tires, you better live on smooth pavement. Of course, the mileage is lousy and the build quality was worse, but set right, they are very enjoyable cars. Another cool thing is the luggage capacity. We once took mine camping and we had a huge cooler, tents, bags, food and TWO ten speed bikes, all under the hatch!
