In the US, it wasn't until the 124 Special TC arrived in '74 that the sedan received the twin cam head. Of course that also came with the heavy rubber bumpers, some emissions and the 1592cc version of the TC that shared more in common with the later 1800 and 2L iterations. Pity, as the 1438 and 1608cc versions always seemed lighter and more willing to rev.\r\nIt would have been quite easy to swap in one of the twin cams. In fact I debated on it for some time. It's pretty much bolt in, maintains same parts sources and would give a little more power. In the end however, this little beauty was just so straight and clean, I decided to keep it stock. For US cars, it was the last year of the OHV engine in the sedan, the last year of the chrome bumpers and looks just right enough to inspire a couple decades of Ladas to follow.\r\n\r\nThe OHV is actually fairly peppy in practice, (same 1438cc as the first spiders), able to cruise on back highways (slightly overmatched chasing certain other FCA marques on one two lane a couple weeks ago but able to stay in the hunt thanks to sharing suspension with the spider), it is really more than enough to get around town but does suffer from lack of 5th gear on long freeway trips. To greater answer your question @rjkarol about anything that could still be done to her, the rubber door and trunk seals have degraded and will need replaced. New ones have now arrived from overseas and will be included but not installed. Hood release latch could be adjusted a little tighter. Trunk light and reverse light need to be reconnected. Small rip in headliner could be sealed/repaired. Paintless dent repair could remove the little ding in the top. I started this but when the 'technician' started to make the headliner worse, I sent him away. Paint correction could touch up the couple chips in the body. One could repaint one of the wheels for a better finish. Sunvisors could have the foam replaced inside or new units exchanged. I guess it depends on how much of a perfect car you are after. If you want to win shows, I would do all these things and look for a few more. It is a great driver though, so I would be most tempted to just use it as such and enjoy it. The other remarkable thing about the OHV version of the 1438, and especially in the Sedan, is there is just so much room to work in the engine bay. It really makes maintenance easier and makes one want to do it and look for little repairs you could do there. Great for the home mechanic and even those who want to learn to do their own maintenance. The earlier technology also makes finding a shop who can work on it easier as well. I had better quit talking about that before I regret the decision to sell.\r\nAs for the running vid requested by @WAH, well let\u2019s just say my video production skills are nowhere near my daughter, or I\u2019m sure many of the younger generation. My first take went perfectly. Warmed her up on choke, took a spin around the country in a mix of conditions, returned home to edit and post video and discovered I had only recorded 8 seconds. Drat. Second take, I found a little sort of shoulder harness at the local big box store, strapped it on and had another nice drive around.
