Ive decided to sell it because I have too many cars and honestly an old County needs to be your primary love because they live up to their reputation as needing lots of love. \r\n\r\nSo the story: got it off eBay, I think 750 bucks. I drove it home two hours and parked it. I decided to do a compression test to see if the head gaskets had any leaks. The numbers were fair, but when I put all the plugs back in it wouldn't fire back up. Ill never know what I did wrong or what happened because I had the truck towed to my trusted mechanic who convinced me to rebuild the engine. The rebuild story is long in itself. We decided to hone the cylinders to .020\" over, for which we thought there were available pistons. After the honing was done, guess what?...those .020 over pistons are no longer available. My mechanic found a shop in California that made pistons to spec. We had pistons made to fit the cylinder bore there and finished the rebuild. This process probably took 6 months. (in retrospect I would have just put in a 4.6 long block and been done with it, or actually it would have been cheaper to have it hauled to the crusher at this point). It is my theory that in this period of time the truck took on a family of mice. \r\n\r\nYou will notice that the air box has some chewing damage to it in certain areas which I repaired. I think that the mice ate the seal between the airbox and the bulkhead, which allowed water in when it rained. This caused the surface rust to the driver and passenger floor boards. Thankfully I caught it early and was able to repair it by grinding it out and applying antirust chemicals and repainting over it. Other than the front floor boards, there is a little rust around the rear hatch frame, and also around the sunroof glass. The sunroof glass is glued to a metal frame which sticks out past the glass, and this metal holds the seal which seals it against the roof. This metal had surface rust. I pulled out the headliner (had new headliner done) and sunroof assembly to address a leak that occurred only in a deluge. I pulled out the seal to have a new seal put in and that is when I discovered the rusty sunroof frame. Seeing as they are NLA and impossible to find used, I repaired the surface rust of the sunroof frame with grinding and chemical treatment, and then painting. I then put a new seal on and reinstalled. It will still leak in a heavy rain. From all the research I have done, this is just RRC fare and I suggest a buyer who can garage their classic Rover. I will get close ups of the rust around the rear hatch frame. It truly is not bad and the last time I checked, you can still get a new replacement rear hatch glass (frame included). \r\n\r\nLet's go back to when the engine was rebuilt. I picked the truck up from the mechanic and drove it for several hundred miles. Well I was itching to take it in the woods; that's what I bought it for was it not??? So I go on some forest service roads only to find out that this is a two wheel drive truck. The front differential is broken and was when I bought it. So that means....(RRC LWB experts..?)...that the viscous coupling is seized, which causes major driveline damage. So I had the front differential replaced, a new (used) transfer case put in (viscous coupling later). These driveline repairs were done at \"The Shop\" in Norcross (Atlanta). While they were doing the above they also rebuild the stub axles, along with new front brake discs (receipts say calipers too, but maybe that just meant serviced calipers, I don't remember having them put on new calipers). They also did some fuel fittings and a new fuel pump and filter. Also they put in a new steering box and pump. After all of this a large portion of the driveline was essentially \"new.\"\r\n\r\nI drove the truck for several hundred miles. But the transmission was a problem when it became warm. The truck went back to \"The Shop.\" I had the transmission rebuilt (the ship it to a place in Florida). I got the truck back and it drove beautifully for the first time. This is when I had the MudClaw tires put on. They went on the original wheels at first. By this time I had a rig with an all new driveline.....it was a shame how it looked....\r\n\r\nOn to the paint job. I had the truck repainted in the original \"Plymouth Blue.\" All the glass was out except for the rear quarter glass. Other than that it was disassembled and painted to have no paint lines showing. I had the paint guys try to restore the original lettering. They did a less than best job at reattaching the lettering and I lost a few letters here and there. I had a new set made and repainted the lettering the original tan shade. Tan on Blue looks awesome, really stands out, especially considering the interior. The original bump strips looked bad and since a lot of the awesome Congleton Service restoration jobs were done without bump strips, it was good enough for my truck for them to be deleted. I also had the original brush guard repainted. It is paint and not a fresh plastic dip, but it does look better anyways. I believe that the brush guard is in fact original to the truck. I have no proof of that but it was installed when I bought it. You will notice that the rear tail light guards are missing. I have looked for some replacements and they are unobtainium. I also replaced the head lights to a European specification bulb, and also replaced the original Lucas fog lights (unobtainium) to Hellas. I added a set of Off Road driving lights (they do work). Also I added Congleton Service brand front door seals. They do seal very well, the only draw back is that the doors take a little more intention to close. Currently no replacement seals for the rear doors for the LWB are available. The original seals are present, that's about the best I can say about them. \r\n\r\nAfter she looked so good on the outside.......the interior needed justice. I somehow found some ORIGINAL FACTORY skins for sale in England. They were two right hand seats. I bought the skins and had one of them altered to fit the left hand seat and installed. The upholstery shop did an excellent job and I cannot tell where it was altered. The rear seat skin is original. I have children and was in no hurry to restore the rear seats. They aren't very bad anyways. The carpets are original. I removed the front section and deep cleaned it outside the car. It looks better, but its still 25+ years old. I spot cleaned the rear section of carpet and the trunk area. I had all of the wood inserts redone by Madera Concepts. They look awesome. I repainted the dashboard, and center console. They look much better. I took great care to have this truck as original as possible. This included trying to preserve the original stereo. I was able to obtain a working head unit. I replaced all the woofer and subwoofer speakers and installed an aftermarket amplifier. All the speakers work except the front driver tweeter. (It is the original ADS speaker). The speaker itself probably still works, I think the problem lies in the crossover unit in the door panel. Im sorry but I don't want to take the door panel off again to see if I can fix it. I even took care to make sure the original ADS subwoofer adjuster knob is still functional. \r\n\r\nThe drivers side door lock does not lock or unlock with the key. For years I would have to lock and unlock the truck on the passenger side door. I decided to have the keyless entry repaired so that I wouldn't have to do that ridiculous maneuver of going from one door to the other to get in/out. I had the keyless entry box sent to England to be refitted to a new keyless entry system. It works well now. Although recently the rear hatch won't unlock with the keyless system. I was daily driving the truck for a few months last year and I couldn't stand how loud the exhaust was. I had the Magnaflow resonator replaced with a stock one to quiet the truck down. \r\n\r\nA sharp eye will also notice that I have euro-spec front turn signal lights installed. \r\n\r\nIve replaced the cables going from the alternator to the starter and starter to battery. Also have replaced the main ground to body cable. I did this to fix the dreaded half lit battery light on the instrument panel. Unfortunately it still is just the slightest lit. It can only be seen in pitch dark with many electrical systems on (lights, brake lights, rolling down windows, a/c fans on etc...). This can indicate a bad ground elsewhere on the truck. Or a lot of rover owners install a higher output alternator. It doesn't affect the driving of the truck, so I haven't done anything past replacing the cables. \r\n\r\nYou'll see pictures of the front drivers seat unbolted and leaned back. That was to access the seat/mirror memory box. The original battery that supplies the memory functions tend to corrode and leak battery acid on the board. I took a picture of the board to show the damage. I sourced a replacement battery. After picking away the corrosion around some of the microchips and putting in the battery, the drivers power seat and the power mirrors work. I also refurbished the drivers seat control, taking off the cover and polishing the contacts. I also did that for the power mirror control. As much of a disaster that Lucas Electrics are, I will say that guts of them are quite robust, using heavy gauge metal, and relying on mechanical units like relays instead of microchips from many functions. I would like to think that they did that to make them repairable as you're crossing the Serengeti, but thats probably just me waxing philosophic. Speaking of relays, I tried to figure out why the rear wiper sprayer won't work. I replaced 2 of the 3 sprayer pump motors for the sprayer reservoir (I tested all of them, they all pump). When the headliner was out I was also able to inspect the rear sprayer hose, and it was in good shape. But I think the problem is the relay that operates the rear wiper sprayer and motor assembly. It is a special relay that allows the wiper to wipe three times after you spray etc. This relay is NLA. I tried to get a used one, but installing that one did not fix it. The rear wiper does work if you just turn it on, full on. I replaced the head light washer nozzles and they work as well. \r\n\r\nThere is a new distributor cap, wires, plugs, and rotor. Do not ever order an aftermarket rotor for these trucks. When they get warm, they ground out through the plastic and you loose your spark. I was able to find an original Lucas rotor, it works well. I have pics showing a new water pump installed, I also put in a thermostat. You'll see pics to show my \"resto\" of the hard heater lines. Originally this was cadmium plated, but mine looked bad, so I just painted it with high temp paint. I did this since I was replacing the heater core hoses, since I had the airbox out (which houses the heater core). The A/C is nice and cold. The only thing that was ever done for the A/C was the fan resister was replaced (this is way easier said than done). \r\n\r\nRebuilding the heater box was a fun project. I split the case, replaced the heater core, found all the mice eaten air direction flaps, replaced the foam to help the flaps seal again (they seal ok, not great). I put a new heater blower motor in (while I was in there). Repaired the mice chewing damage to the plastic case. I reinstalled with a new seal for the bulkhead/heater box mating. Also while I had the box out I noticed that it was missing the air director to the passenger footwell, I looked for a replacement, but could not find them.\r\n\r\nReminds me of some missing trim on the inside. The passenger side door sill/tread plate is missing. Ive looked for years for a black one, cannot find. Also the passenger door pocket is missing. A lot of the trim around the front seats has corners snapped off here and there, but they still function. The truck was always missing a grab handle on the passenger side, when I did the headliner I was able to get a used one in the right color off of eBay. Also the little trim around the tailgate handle had all the tabs broken off during the paint job, I still have the piece. I did replace the lift tabs for the tailgate with units from Congleton Service. I put in new dome light covers. The gear selector strips are original and I glued them back on with trim glue, but it apparently is not the right glue for the job, because the strips have bowed up at the ends. \r\n\r\nThe truck is missing its original jack and I'm not sure if they came with a tool kit or not. I did buy a jack from Harbor Freight and put a tool kit (YOU'RE GONNA NEED IT!!!) in the spare tire area. The spare I think is a 235/75/16. I tried to fix it by replacing some of the vacuum lines, it still doesn't work. \r\n\r\nAlso I replaced the front left ABS sensor and put in a new brake pedal switch. The front right ABS sensor is functional, but the wire insulation is damaged, and will probably need a new one soon. I disable the traction control light on the instrument panel. I did this before I had the ABS fixed. I have not tried to put the traction control light back in, and Im not going to.\r\n\r\nForgot to mention during the heater box resto, I put a new fan switch in, the old one looked burned up and Im surprised it hadn't caused a fire, it probably melted when the A/C fan resistor failed. I also had to repair some of the illumination light tabs for the HVAC, I was able to solder them back on. (Talk about unobtainium, HVAC illumination light tabs???? yeah right!)\r\n\r\nI tried and cannot figure out why the puddle lights and door open lights won't work. Please under stand these are the lights in the door that shine down on the ground when the door is open, also they indicate to drivers by that the door is open, so they don't run into your open door! These cars (and particularly older RR Classics) are notorious for electrical glitches. But there is. 600-page electrical trouble shooting manual that is available for free on the web. My car was bought as a project with several systems not working, and the troubleshooting manual has been a godsend. This manual is a bit complicated to understand, but it contains many of the answers to questions the new buyer will have. This car should have electrics very similar to the 1995 model.
