These are awesome - in my mind they are the last true successor to the BMW 2002 with a four cylinder engine, no frills, and snappy handling. Plus they can haul a bunch of stuff. \n\nI keep waiting for the cat to get out of the bag on these - if you can get over the \"trunk impaired\" styling, you'll find these feel a lot like an E30 behind the wheel. They're not hard to work on, and I agree with @ExceptTheClock in that I prefer the sport interior in these cars to most E36s (Vader seats in the M3 coupes are hard to beat). \n\nPrior to my 1998, I had a 1995 in Boston Green that I swapped the sport seats into and also pulled back from the grave. I sold the car to make room for an Oxford Green Sport, Stick, RWD E46 wagon (I waited YEARS to find this combo of packages). I still have the wagon (and love it), but the lack of a ti left a hole in my heart. They are just so toss-able and fun. So to my wife's horror, I dragged home the decrepit 98' M-sport 7 months later. Can't stay away. \n\nIf you want an E30 318is or 2002 with more modern amenities at a fraction of the price (and with less rust issues) - this is your ticket. \n\nThis one is also a lovely color (I wish you could have ordered red mill point or the purple swirl interior with Alaska Blue, but grey was the only factory approved option based on my sales brochure). Heated seats AND the \"active package\" which include the OBC make this car exceedingly rare - especially in this condition. Throw on a proper 3-spoke M3 steering wheel, a ZHP shift knob, a Z3 1.9 shifter, and the suspension setup of your preference and you're good to go for endless smiles. Have two of these (95 bought on BAT & 96) along with two Corvettes (70 and 04 Z06) . The bimmers are the most fun to drive and very easy to work on. Parts are readily available and cheap. The least weight of any E36 platform. Refreshed both cars with BMW bolt on bushing from the M series, Z3 steering rack, Z3 X-brace, Z3 shifter with teflon bushings, refreshed all hoses/cooling system parts....they start to fail at 100k mark, new HD tie rods, B4 Bilstein shocks/struts, refreshed brakes, new timing chain tensioner, rebuilt the LSD. Last but not least, for the 95 upgraded induction system to RHD individual throttle bodies. Considered turbo and SC but wanted something simple with no strain on the motor. No six conversion to keep weight down. The total do over is a hoot to drive. Got about 30 - 40hp increase with no weight gain. The steering/suspension/brake combo is fantastic....more fun to drive than the vettes. The E30 rear suspension gets a bad rap. It is simple and effective and carried over to the Z3. All this in a very practical package that has a good driving position and lots of interior space. This car looks very nice inside and out although I would prefer zero rust. A fun, tossable, reliable like the sunrise and sunset go kart. \nIt is super inexpensive to operate and soooooo easy to work on. \nI'm an E30 guy to the core of my genes, but I love my Ti as well.\nI may have missed it in the comments below but for me other than stiffening up the suspension the overwhelming best bang for the buck alteration to do on these is to swap in a lightweight flywheel. It changes everything. The car feels so much more alive and responsive. BMW saddled these little M44s with a flywheel thats similar in weight to a manhole cover. Throw a nice light aluminum flywheel in it and it transforms the car with all other engine being stock. You keep stock reliability and the fun factor goes through the roof.\nI will close with I hope this really nice example goes to a good home and to the new owner let NO ONE, EVER talk you into swapping the engine. \nThey are fantastic with the M42 or the M44. Put vented 328i calipers on the front, and added good pads, rotors, and stainless steel brake lines. Changed the diff out for an LSD. Replaced the leaking oil filter housing gasket and oil pan gasket, which solved our oil drip issues. Added an UUC short-shift kit. Replaced the ignition coil pod and ignition wires with a neat CoP set up. Fixed the driver front window regulator issue, and replaced the sagging headliner. Changed out the wheels for 17\" 530i wheels and sticky tires. Had to put in some Sparco front seats because this car sticks to the road, and we needed seats that would hold us in place. The SuperSprint exhaust sounds great. This little car, now with about 106,000 miles on it, is such a blast to drive. Although not quite as fast an an E36 M3, we know that after they barely squeeze past us on the straights, it won't belong before we'll be on them in the corners. These cars are tough, fun, and just love to rev. Keep them high, use the brakes sparingly, and the momentum you build will reward you. It's the \"grinniest\" car I've ever had. Just so much fun. My highway cruise RPM I want to be just under that. \nSo driving by the tach keeping under 3900 RPM with the stock 3.46 I would get 32MPG at around 75-80, with going to the 2.90 now at the same RPM I could go 85-90.\nI hope that makes sense and clarifies my statement. The MPG is accurate and verified by hand calc at the pumps. Sorry I should have been more clear when I made that statement.\n\n@carsick - I used an M50 JB Aluminum flywheel which used a 228mm clutch assembly not the smaller 4cyl assembly. I think the flywheel is around 9Lbs, the larger 228mm clutch assembly adds a little weight, but when used on a 1.9 4cyl will \"never\" wear out.
