Remember that the top of the roof is approximately waist-high. So low that In traffic the rear view through the mirror consists of license plates and bumpers of other vehicles directly behind. Changing lanes in traffic is very stressful - put on turn signal, edge over slowly and hope that either there's no other vehicle in your massive blindspot, or that the other driver sees you moving over and gets out of the way. Both scenarios are gambles at best. There is a sort-of solution though.\r\n\r\nMy '71 Europa S1(b) had one of those \"Wink\" wide angle rearview mirrors. Anyone remember those? It was about three feet wide and three inches deep, the housing contained five separate smaller mirrors all mounted at slightly different angles. It gave an almost 180 degree view from the driver's seat. It seemed very gimmicky, but it really worked well in the Europa.\r\n\r\nThere was only one problem with the \"Wink\". The interior of the Europa is very tight as far as ingress/egress. Once inside there's a surprising amount of room but getting in & out requires a bit of contortion, even for a twenty-something much skinnier me back then. The wide angle mirror mounted above the windshield hung down low enough that getting out of the car quickly could result in a good \"Whack!\" on the forehead. Blood was spilled several times in that manner.\r\n\r\nI tried removing the mirror a few times because of this head-banging issue, but it quickly went back in each time. The big advantage in rear vision was more than worth the occasional pain and bloodletting. S1 Europas began production in 1966 (first mid engined production road car) and by 1968 they were S1 1/2 with proper windows. S2 production ran April 1968 to mid 1971 model year. BTW I ran CN36s on mine which worked well, but were so sticky I couldn't get the car to drift no matter what I did. (I recall that I tried very hard...) These need about 150HP before they are really fun to drive. The Gordini/16TS/17 hemi engine is a great solution.
