The body is extremely stiff. The suspension, again when set up properly, enables the TR7 to handle like a slot car.\nI drove my bright orange TR7 hardtop from June to October last year as a daily driver here in Detroit. It was completely reliable and never once let me down in 4,100 miles. That ain't bad for a 1979 model year British Leyland car. My TR8 sat in the garage.\nNow, these early cars had issues, but it looks like this one has had a terrific owner. In the U.K., TR7s are on the list of classic cars with the fastest rising values. Parts support is generally excellent.\nMost people who know me on BAT know that TR7s and TR8 are my favorite cars. I made a beeline straight to the gleaming TR7 sitting in the driveway like it was a present just for me. He met us at the curb as we exited our Country Squire wagon and he could tell immediately that I was excited (I did not even think to grab my bag out of our car). He gave me a smile & said \"you want to drive it?\" Then without delay tossed me the keys. I can still see those keys coming at me through the air as in slow motion. My cool Uncle smiling towards me. \n\nI jumped right in & fired the TR7 up. The cassette tape in the deck started playing Super Tramp (take the long way home) as if on Que. I checked the gauges, snicked the gearbox into reverse, and off I went. \n\nIt was heaven on earth. Missouri back roads, youth, Super Tramp on the cassette deck and a TR7 coupe. I drove on & on. \n\nThe full track played through the speakers twice that day as I soaked up the miles in my Uncles TR7. He did not know it but he forged a bond that weekend that continues on even today. \n\nSports cars and cool Uncles... I loved it. Plain and simple. It was a great handling, comfortable, mostly reliable daily driver for a number of years. It handled so much better than any other Triumph I had owned, had seats made for normal humans, heat that worked, wipers that worked, and even when injured would limp home like a faithful shepherd dog protecting the flock. \n\nThere were times I doubted it's loyalty: broke the tailshaft housing of the transmission over a bump on the MassPike - drained all of the gearbox lube and welded itself into top gear, yet still made it more than 100 miles to home, on Christmas eve, with my partner with me telling me that her parents would disown her and me if we didn't make it back. \n\nWent completely dead in the middle of rush hour traffic, in the rain, at the middle of a three mile long bridge, in the middle lane - put in the clutch, coasted along until I was becoming a traffic hazard, let the clutch out and all was go again. \n\nStalled at a traffic light in Harlem, NYC for no apparent reason. Kids playing basketball started pelting it with snowballs. Counted to ten, turned the key and it fired right up. \n\nIt also provided me with so many memorable drives that I've promised myself I'd own another before I'm so old I can't coordinate clutch foot and gearshift hand. Whether it's a coupe or a roadster, I'm not sure, but I'd take either without much hesitation.\n\nGuy down the street owns a TR-7; roadster, couple the other way own a TR-8 roadster. It was my daily driver for 13 years, and it got me to work 6 days a week. I did 2 head gaskets, a heater core, replaced the ignition with an aftermarket, and the carbs with Webers eventually. I'd still own it if not for a Buick rear ending me in 1993. I currently own an 80 DHC, with a Dolly Sprint 16v conversion that I've had for about 20 years, so I know these cars pretty well. The build quality of the earlier cars was dodgy, partly by poor engineering, partly by labor union sabotage. A neighbor was a dealer mechanic, and said a Lucas rep had told him the electrics were so bad because BL kept coming back asking for a cheaper bid until Lucas gave them the cheapest stuff they could make and not get sued. The 79 and 80 cars were much better. \r\nTrivia question: What part is interchangeable between a TR3 and a TR7? A:The TR7 lighting rheostat and the TR3 heater fan rheostat, one is push on connectors, the other screw on, other wise carbon copies\r\nOverall a pretty car in remarkable shape, I love it. Tighten the subframe bolts, steering rack bolts/nuts, etc. to factory settings.\n(5) Replace the front suspension bushings if they are original.\n(6)\tFind a tire store that has a Hunter Roadforce tire balancing machine. This device balances two ways. First, it balances the tire to the wheel, then it balances the tire and wheel as an assembly. Inflate front tires to 28 pounds.\n\nThis is how I have cured the shake in all of my TR7s and TR8s My latest car, a \u201979 coupe, was a little more difficult. I changed front hubs. They used a special machine to spin up the tire. Tech felt the fender for vibration and somehow knew how much weight to add and where. Lost art for sure. First and only time that vibration was 100% gone. After a few years, vibration returned as tires wore down. Had them balanced on car again with new alignment , and was good to go. A quick bath in kerosene, wash and wax prepped the exterior. All of the mirrors and accessories were packed in the trunk wrapped in British Newspapers. Would read the papers during lunch break.\n\nThis TR7 was first new british car I ever purchased. I just couldn't resist. I was not disappointed. It was a flashback to high school and college. My partner said I was crazy, that we would never find a buyer for it. For a while I was beginning to think he was right.\r\n\r\nThe guy I bought it from had done a lot of good work to. It wasn't as pretty as this one; it had lots of patina but was not a rusty car. They were panned for the hard plastic but these interiors hold up remarkably well, are comfortable with good ergonomics. Like all Triumphs, the motor was nice and torquey for a four banger, the gearing well suited for spirited driving and the 5th gear helped move it along on the freeway. Brakes were more than adequate. \r\n\r\nIt languished a bit among the Porsches and Alfas and Datsuns that are always passing though here. But it never failed to start right up and always put a satisfying grin on my face.\r\n\r\nI did finally sell it, that's what shameless flippers like me do. It found an enthusiastic new owner who is planning a cross country tour, convoying with his brothers in their own classic brits. We wailed on that car literally beat it to death in one summer. He begged my dad to let him replace it. My mother of all people intervened and my friend bought another one virtually identical car.
