The motor is sweet - Lotus twin cam! The tranny shifts nice - better than the Alfa. The car drove okay, but felt like a kit car. To me, it felt much older than it should have. So I didn't buy it.\r\n\r\nOn the way home, I contemplated if I made a smart move. This can only lead to more owners being encouraged to restore, or at least properly maintain the remaining examples.\r\n\r\nWill values eventually mirror the GTV, as has been suggested? Unlikely, as they lack the racing record of the former and, as we have seen with Porsche 911\u2019s, the current market seems to have a preference for coupes over convertibles. However, there is very good reason to believe that in coming years S2\u2019s will appreciate more than the S3 and S4 and that the gap to the S1 Duetto may eventually narrow. \r\n\r\n The S2 Spider is closer to the orignal concept than subsequent editions, being a bare bones sports car that is faster ( it is lighter and has more horsepower ) and to my eyes, being more attractive with its form fitting stainless steel bumpers and prominent Alfa triangular grill. Certainly it has a more of a vintage appearance and more simple mechanicals that will be easier to maintain. \r\n\r\nThe S2 also has much to commend it over the Duetto:\r\n\r\n- the S2 introduced the 2.0 litre engine with more horsepower and improved torque, giving greater flexibility.\r\n- the S2 introduced the limited slip differential.\r\n- the S2 introduced the more readible dual pod dashboard and the more comfortable hung, rather than floor mounted pedals.\r\n- the S2 had better aerodynamics with its Kamm tail and more sharply raked windshield.\r\n- the S2 has greater trunk space ( you can actually carry golf clubs ) in spite of a shorter overall length.\r\n\r\nIndeed, to many the S2 is also a more attractive and balanced design than the Duetto with its rather awkward attempt to mimic the sloped rear end of the E-type Jaguar. While this is obviously a subjective opinion, it is worth noting that it reflects the contemporary opinions of the motoring press who were decidedly cool to the design of the Duetto - the European press nicknamed it the cuddlefish, while Road & Track described it as gimmicky and overstyled.\r\n\r\nIn any event, I am watching this auction with considerable interest. Even though it lacks the original Spica injection, it should be remembered that the Euro spec cars had carbs rather than injection and that Webers should prove easier and cheaper to maintain in the coming years (last I checked, Wes Ingram had a 9 month waiting list for rebuilt Spica pumps). The non-original color and lack of rubber floor mats shouldn\u2019t have too much of an effect since the car presents exceptionally well and rubber flooring is still available for those who wish to install them.
