I had been looking for a number of months and looked over a handful of option before finding this one. I've loved driving and owning this one.\r\n\r\nFast forward to now. Although I could make the size work for a while, the thought of spilled milkshakes and pulverized goldfish snack being permanently imedded into the interior is more than I can bear. The plunger that operates the mechanical fuel pump can break and the debris winds up in the oil pan. In my case a dime-sized piece of metal was not removed from the pan when the previous owner had the repair performed. The second day I owned the car it wound up in the drive chain for the oil pump, breaking the chain and leading to complete destruction of the engine. I spent almost as much as I had spent to buy it to get a replacement engine installed. Over the years there are many times in snow and ice driving that I actually found ABS OFF to be more effective at stopping/controlling and car. FWIW, I am finicky about clutch feel and shy away from buying a vehicles with any sort of odd clutch feel. More so because I wonder about the previous owners use of the car (and not noticing a softer clutch) than of the task of replacing a clutch. \r\n\r\nAs with the good care of maintenance on other aspects of the car, I felt good about the clutch feel because of the sense I had about the rest of the car. It felt to me as though the previous owner a clean commuter that mixed their drive with in town and highway. The suspension was tight with no clunks and squeaks. It retained the classic tight Audi feel.\r\n\r\nAs for it's current state. I have driven it with a mix of in town and highway. Most of that highway was road trips across Washington and a trip to see the family in Colorado. Although I have no crystal ball on the clutch life remaining, I can say that it feels very positive and has not been on my radar as an item will need attention in the near future. One of the dealers in 2016-17 commented on weeping motor mounts. When the timing belt was done I had the dealer install a new front skid plate. At the time they noted the oil leak but no comment of the motor mounts on their vehicle inspection. \r\nLast week, while taking pictures of the underbody, I removed part of the front skid plate (see pics). to take a closer look at both the motor mounts and the noted oil leak. \r\n\r\nThe motor mounts showed no sign of leakage and, likewise, I have felt no notable vibration. \r\nFor the oil leak noted, I had noticed a leak around the valve cover and had the valve cover replaced. the only signs of oil residue I spotted were near the valve cover and the oil filter housing. Neither showed fresh oil. I wiped both clean so that I can monitor them. There have been no leaks as of yet but very few miles have been put on the Avant since then.\r\n\r\nThe final of the three items was a split boot on the outer driverside steering ball end. The Audi dealer made no mention of it when they did the alignment last summer so my assumption is that it opened up after the visit. It was almost completely worn through when I bought the car at 155K miles. I caught it just in time. With an upgraded hpfp, there is a lot more wear on them. Also, in '07 (I believe), VW/Audi started using a different cam where the lobe running the hpfp was hardened. The earlier engines had catastrophic failures much earlier. I'm running Eurodyne stage 2 with full bolt-ons on my GTI. Definitely a really fun car to tear the asphault up with.\r\n\r\nQuestion for the @Muerco. Why were only two ignition coils replaced? Do you have a record on the spark plugs? I was not aware of any potential issues with the plunger.\r\n\r\nI like your recommendation on the coils. I think I will adopt that in the future. I have always seen them as a replace as needed item. (Lol, I guess that's coming from the old AAN Coils with the POS units). On the Avant, I had the first coil fail shortly after purchasing it. The second one died this last summer on the way to Colorado. We stopped into an Audi dealer and I bought two. One to replace and the second as a spare that I keep with the car. \r\nAs for the spark plugs. I did pull them when I replaced the first coil. Most people, including myself, would rather pay a bit extra for parts and not worry about another failure in the ignition system. It doesn\u2019t look good when a tech changes spark plugs, and a month later an ignition coil goes bad. The client comes back with what they feel is the \u201csame problem\u201d and have to pay a diagnostic fee again. Pay more for parts in the first place and avoid inconvenient failures on the road. \ud83e\udd37\ud83c\udffb\u200d\u2642\ufe0f That\u2019s the way I see it and recommend it. I always give people the option to go about it the way they want to though. I just have to document everything. \r\n\r\nVW/Audi coils aren\u2019t that expensive, so it\u2019s not a big deal. They\u2019ve also had a ton of revisions over the years. I blew two coils in three days after flashing stage 1 software on my GTI. I bought four brand new plugs and coils from the dealer, and haven\u2019t had an issue since. I have owned my '86 DoubleCab syncro for over 20 years and when the motor got tired in it I swapped it to an early 90's S4 (AAN). \r\nSO, the replacement vehicle ended up being an '87 VW Weekender syncro with a 2.5 Subaru motor. It's first road trip was a return to Colorado to visit the grandparents over the holidays. It's no Audi on the highway, pushing with effort to hold 75mph. BUT, in the middle of teen temps, and a closed interstate for 5 hours in the wee hours, it earned its stripes. Offering a heated sleeping space and peace of mind. \r\nI am sure I will make a return to the venerable Avant down the line.
