A little history of my ownership with this bike.\r\nThe only time I have ridden it is when we moved house a couple of years ago. The distance from our old house to the new one was only about 30 miles, and a very enjoyable ride.\r\nThroughout the journey the bike ran flawlessly, but even though I knew it had recently had a new piston fitted, I committed the cardinal sin of plodding up a long incline in top gear instead of changing down. I thought I felt the engine tighten, pulled in the clutch and came to a stop. After waiting a few minutes for it to cool down, I finished the journey without incident.\r\nLater I stripped the engine and could see evidence of a pick-up on the piston. It was slight, but I had the barrel re-bored and fitted a new piston. Also I found the carburettor to be 1 1/8\" bore instead of 1 1/16\" as it should be. So I ordered a new Amal carb with the correct slide and jets. \r\nUnfortunately I cannot fine-tune the carb. for 2 reasons. 1 - I live at 7,000 ft. altitude, so for most potential buyers this effort would be counterproductive, and 2. I was involved in a nasty car crash last year so I am no longer able to work on bikes, which is why this is for sale in the first place. But I have full faith in Amal supplying the correct instrument. Since doing this work, I have run the bike, but not ridden it.\r\nWhen I had the barrel off I could check the con-rod and main bearings. Spare parts are readily obtainable, but it takes a while for delivery. Alton provides a very good instruction book (included in the sale), detailing the installation, circuit diagram, etc. The starter works well (a video is coming).\r\nOne of the other benefits of the Alton is that it comes with a very good 12 Volt charging system. Again, there is a video coming showing the Miller ammeter reacting to revving the engine a little.\r\nAlton emphasizes that the decompressor should be used to allow the engine to turn over easily and quickly before releasing the decompressor to start the engine. Apparently the Alton starter clutch does not like the engine kicking back with the clutch engaged. Its relatively mild state of tune makes it easy to start, gives fuel economy and it is virtually vibration free at highway speeds. It may not have the level of performance of a Venom or a Thruxton, but it has the same rock steady handling and will hold 65 mph all day long without breaking a sweat. The red colour and reference to a past life in British Columbia leads me to believe that this is the same bike that I helped a previous owner resolve some clutch issues a few years ago. I rode my Venom many miles, both touring, and to work in city traffic. Like any big single, there is a trick, but once mastered, it is easy. Open the pet cock, tickle the carb. Retard the spark. Choke is usually not necessary in moderate weather. Astride the bike with the stands up, slowly swing the kick start lever to TDC. Using the compression release, slip just pass TDC. Release the compression lever. Whilst sitting on the bike give the lever a swift push down. You don't need to jump on the lever, you just need to get the flywheel moving and the let the flywheel do all the work. This is how I learned and it always started first or second go. So does my Gold Star. So do most of my bikes. My BSA 441 Victor is a bit finicky regarding how hot it is. From cold, one kick, two at most. When hot, it either starts on the first kick or the 21st kick.
