As a fan of the second-gen Seville (even though radically different from the first and not as beautiful), the '79-85 Eldorado and '80-85 Fleetwood Brougham RWD, it was disappointing the diesel and 368 were probably the best engine choices of the era. \n\nYes, if you used the separator, the diesel would last, and it was powerful enough and very fuel-efficient. Not much smoke nowadays either with the low-sulfur fuel. The '80-81 368 was fine, heavy, and not very powerful, but it was reliable\u2014the last Cadillac big-block. As @OnlyBlackCars mentioned, the V8-6-4 feature in '81 could be deactivated. \n\nWhy in the world Cadillac couldn't have used the Old 350 EFI out of the '79 Eldorado across the board, I will never know. The Olds engine was the easiest to pass emissions and the reason GM used it, with a carb, until '90. (It also replaced the 368 in CA for the '80 Eldo.) Or the 307 that went into most of the Rivieras at that time. No, they had to be clever and develop an all-new 4.1L aluminum-block, iron-head V8 that only Cadillac would use from '82-85. \n\nThere were many issues with the \"HT4100\" that some say were worked out by '85, the last year, while others say we're not. For those who don't know, problems included blown head gaskets from head studs pulling. To deal with the metallurgy issues inside the engine, I've heard regular maintenance should include adding \"pellets\" to the cooling system.\n\nThis is a neat car, just saying if you're interested in a 4.1L Seville, have a PPI done and read up on maintaining it. I've never driven one but sat in them new at car shows. Loved the interior. Higher quality leather than other GM models; you can tell by the pics of the seats. The stitching and forms were impressive too. The dash design is one of my favorites from Cadillac, so much better than the generic Euro look that started with the '89 Seville STS. \n\nThey made many improvements to the 4.1L when they bumped it up to 4.5L and finally 4.9L. I've heard the 4.9s were very reliable and long-lasting.\n\nThe most irritating aspect of Cadillac's engine line-up is that the '80-85 Coupe de Ville RWD had the HT4100 for four of its short six-year run. In the RWD models, the 4.1L reliability was even worse because that was a quick conversion over from the FWD design in Seville / Eldorado, as a last-minute change on the RWD de Villes and Fleetwoods. \n\nThat ill-advised decision has taken nearly all of the '82-85 CDVs off the road, leaving just '80-81s with the box body and a decent engine. Given GM's track record on cracked iron heads starting in the mid 1970s and continuing thru the Vortec 350 of the late 1990s, I'm not sure about the validity of that reason. I'm guessing that the real reason was more about the cost of parts and labor to install the necessary separate valve seats and guides on every port of an aluminum head and/or GM's inability to cast aluminum parts without porosity issues. As an example, these engines are notorious for leaking coolant THRU the block if the coolant isn't maintained religiously including the addition of sealer pellets. Unfortunately, the different thermal expansion rates off the iron heads between an aluminum intake manifold and block resulted in gasket failures and head bolts pulling out of the block, a tradition continued on the Northstar. Hearsay is that the 1984 and later HT4100 with finned aluminum valve covers (rather than chrome valve covers like the early ones) are somehow improved to reduce these failures.\n\nAs for the wheel covers, my 1985 Toronado has bolts in the centers of the wheel covers. I'd have to assume that if wheel covers are flying off, somebody left out the bolts. They should have thought more about the differing expansion rates of an aluminum block, iron heads and aluminum intake. The most common failure was the intake gasket, causing the dreaded milkshake in the crankcase. Unfortunately unlike a chevy v8 or v6 which you could replace the gaskets and change the oil twice, the bearings on the 4.1 would be toast. So, blown intake = new engine plus sealing tabs.
