Excellent high speed cruiser and tho the fuel mileage isn't great by current standards (21-22 at sea level, 24 in the mountains) it more than makes up for it in comfort and excellent road holding. slippery roads just aren't a problem. \r\n\r\nMy wife worked one of those jobs where she HAD to be there, and we had 14\" of snow one day they hadn't plowed our streets yet but she raised it up and drove right out of the hood to where the streets had been cleaned. \r\n\r\nWonderful car but - I blew one of the front air bags and replaced them both with Arnott bags, I replaced 5 more Arnott bags over the next 10 years that we had the car. We now have a \"smallroad\" and while it's a great car too, we do notice the difference between it and the A6 chassis one we had before. I know when I do take the plunge for something major, it's not cheap; yet, these cars are really well-built. Looking at the total cost of ownership, even with some major expenses, I still think these make sense - if you buy the right car. BaT is pretty good at flushing that out over 7 days. The math won't make sense to someone who gets excited by an ultra-low mileage Honda Civic and is prepared to spend 10s of thousands on that. I'm that time I did valve cover gaskets (and the obvious items like spark plugs while you're there), timing belt and water pump (preventative), and oil changes. My car was blessed with great maintenance before me, and I cannot overstate how accurate the statement is \"the most expensive Allroad you'll own is the one you bought cheap.\"\n\nOne point of contention I have with the maintenance fear mongering that occurs with these cars is the turbos. My car was chipped, and I used all of that boost frequently (I don't but fast cars to drive slow). Never once did I worry about or have evidence of turbo issues. There are a lot of 2.7t's that have turbo problems, but they're almost all B5 S4's. The smaller engine bay has less ability to cool, and the drivers are less likely to be nice to their turbos (allowing some cool down after driving hard, changing with high quality oil frequently).\n\nThe auto transmissions are a problem (no question of if it will fall, but when). Same for front air suspension, they will eventually leak. But when the auto goes it's not a deal breaker to replace and you can (relatively) inexpensively replace the suspension with Arnott parts or a coil conversion.\n\nWill it have some maintenance costs? Yes. So will any German performance car.
