Drove that one over 100k. Restored a 1980 OTS including rebuilding engine. Carbs were always difficult to get tuned right but the FASD(choke) was always the biggest problem to keep working right. Couldn\u2019t find anybody that knew anything. Took it apart in frustration and figured out needed a good cleaning. A little carb cleaner sprayed on the piston from time to time kept it working. Grease on electric switches tended to dry out causing problem but after taking them apart with good cleaning no further issues. The EFI is absolutely great. Just need to disconnect ECU before allowing any electric welding(when exhaust work done). I would do leather on the seats, change the door cards and top to black and that's it. I had a number of these cars back in the 1990's including a FI TR8. I guess I became somewhat of an expert on them. They were cheap entertainment along with the Fiat Spiders. Never had a FI TR7, but I understand that they were very lively. I rebuilt one of the carbed engines with high compression pistons and that really made a difference. I think they were 9 to 1 and stock was 8 to 1. The carbs work great once you undo all the \"tuning\" that prior owners did and replace the auto choke with a manual. The auto choke tended to make the cars run rich which contributed to worn out pistons on the older cars. I experimented with my restored car and removed the fan opting for an electric unit from Pep Boys. This system worked great because you could adjust the temperature at which the fan kicks on. I also upgraded the head studs/bolts with ARP fasteners. It's a good idea to retorque the head once a year. These cars are really underappreciated. I liked them because they were comfortable for a 6'2\" guy with long legs. One day I looked at a nice TR6. My wife and I drove my restored TR7 over to the seller's house. After the test drive my wife said what I was thinking - the TR6 drove like a bucket of bolts compared to the TR7. Maybe the suspension was just tired, but I never looked at another TR6 and wound up buy Pete Paxton's TR8 for a good price with a truckload of spare's. Pete was a showroom stock racer that lived in Annapolis and was well known around those parts. He told me the story of how he had one of his TR8's claimed and the next time he raced he beat the guy that claimed his car (driving the TR8) with his TR7. Agree, fuel injection was exactly what the MD ordered. The carb-equipped early production cars were so tough to keep in-tune. Car(s) drove respectably as expected. The overlap of the TR6\u2019s with higher window stickers allowed the 7\u2019s to carve out their own market niche. My initial driving impressions were the 7\u2019s were not put together as well as the Spitfires and TR6\u2019s. Comments earlier confirmed my thoughts. Switchover to Solihull-built cars made them more solid. Yes, The Wedge Shop had all sorts of go-faster goodies that owners would employ. Don\u2019t recall much about racing them but sure someone did at some point. As for resales, the coupes faired better when compared with the convertibles. As most Cheese-Head residents knew, Wisconsin had 2 seasonalities Winter and Road Construction. While I had a fraternity brother drive a MGB convertible year round at school, just couldn\u2019t fathom driving one when exterior temps were way below 0F. Should be a great beginner car for a history buff. Most were for the US market which may be why or a US citizen bought the car in England with the intention of export to US. At 70mph with the wind whipping your hair it has been a really fun car to drive. Plenty of luggage space for a weekend out for two. \r\nThe efi is a Bosch system. There were some 7s produced using the dolomite sprint 16 valve engine but I don\u2019t know if any were fuel injected. Also, if convertibles had been offered from the start, in stead of only coupes, and had provided better corrosion protection in the early cars ( cars from 1979 to 1981 were much, much better cars than the early cars suffering no real rust problems and being consistently assembled with proper care, then Triumph might still be with us. It really was a fine car from 1979 till the end in 81. I owned a BRG 1980 convertible for six fun filled years, and only a few minor repair issues ever surfaced...nothing that ever left me stranded. There are a surprising \r\nnumber of changes from the 80' model to the 81' model, although fuel injection was the only major change. I remember that my Canadian market, dual Stromboli cared convertible only produced about 95 BHP. Does anyone know how much power the fuel injected model made ?\r\nIt quite possibly was needed to pass emission testing ?\r\n Finally, the biggest disappointment as far as I was concerned was that although they had access to the Rover aluminum engine of 3.5 litres initially ( a former Buich 215 Cubic inch aluminum engine that Buick only used for about 3 years ) , they didn't offer it until quite late in the production run. Although it only produced about 135 BHP iirc, it felt like a lot more, possibly because of decent torque numbers. I'm quite sure that no 16 valve sprint cars were sold to the public but just used as works cars, and the 3.5 litre V8 was used successfully in rally cars almost from the start of production in '76, as TR7 V8's. Not TR8'S. SUCH a shame.\r\nThe 16 valve engine or the very late to the party TR8's would have made the 79 to 81 cars much better, even though by that time the cars were finally quite good cars. Poor management has killed off so many British CA rs that it's sort of depressing to think about. It\r\nmust have been doubly bad for British folks. These were the 79 to 81 cars that were finally really good cars. But it was far too late by then. The TR7 reputation was ruined by then. Yes most TR8\u2019s came to USA and Canada. I can\u2019t justify laying blame on the workers striking ever other hour. It took years of mismanagement by fool like Lenard Lord ( in part ) that basically culminated in the demise of the low priced British car. The classic mini is a prime example IMO. They kept building them ( I\u2019m VERY HAPPY THAT THEY DID ! ;-) but were barely making a nickel in profits on them. So no money to further develop the product, and more importantly not enough income to afford even small wage increases. This death of the common British car took over 20 years to culminate, and cars from Japan were far better value in the same class. I remember the awful quality of cars like the B engine powered Austin/ Morris Marina attempting to compete with cars like the carolla ( sp? ).
