Being quality cars they were still around in fair numbers along with their contemporaries like Rover 90's and Triumph Mayflowers. Leather interiors & wooden dashboards they were all very elegant but generally neglected and unwanted, except by us teens to play with.\r\n\r\nThe Rileys looked great with their vinyl roofs, all the rage in the Seventies but the problem was the frame was wood, not metal. You'd press your fingers in firmly over the roof and if it \r\nfelt dry & crumbly or wet & soft, you'd pass. You'd know it was gone, especially if there was any tears in the roof fabric.\r\n\r\nHappy days playing with old cars and flicking them off. Just wish I'd had the sense and where with all to put a few good ones away but I suppose we all say that. The vehicle has hydro-mechanical brakes: hydraulic fronts, mechanicals at the rear. Floating master cylinder actuates the rears as the fronts start to grab. Not ideal to say the least, but Rileys did acquit themselves in rallies and saloon class races in the day. Big ends are prone to oil starvation as a result of sludge build-up inside the crank, typically after years of unuse. Rileys are also known for great handling thanks to rack-and-pinion steering and a superb 4-speed synchro box. I've owned several RMBs including one my dad purchased new which served as my everyday transportation during the seventies. The UK-based Riley RM Club offers a vast array of parts and an excellent newsletter. The Facebook enthusiast group is also vibrant and informative. Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me to learn that the mileage is original or close to it. They weren't really fun around town as the the steering wasn't assisted and the car was not lightweight, but on the open road they were a great cruiser. The comment on the bottom end and crankshaft is accurate. Bearing material as I recall was babbit and ours had to be rebuilt. BMC in Toronto had the main Canadian repair facility and the rebuilt engine was very smooth once broken in. The wet sump held slightly over 5 quarts so warming up the engine took some time. Long stroke engine had lots of torque but no sense in revving the engine. The top end was a pushrod hemi head with twin cams in cheeks on either side of the block.Flat out in good tune was good for something over 90. The front brakes were great, but good overall braking required that the mechanical rears were well adjusted. Later on there was a hydraulic conversion set available for the rear brakes. Ours was BRG with BRG leather and tan wool carpets. In the 40s and 50s they belonged to a period at least a decade earlier. \r\n\r\nI was seduced by the fine lines of the 2,5 litre car and owned two or three of these in the 60s and 70s. The failings of the the wood frame, too dry, too wet, always beat me. The only remedy was a full rebuild which required considerable wood-working skills I didn't have. Acquiring those required a certain rare obsessive personality I believe.\r\n\r\nAdded to to the idiosyncratic frame issues were idiosynsratic mechanical issues The engine had a big heart and the gearbox was a joy, but .. The babbit big-end bearings could be cured by Bedford or International truck bearings or a set of Riley Pathfinder conrods. Brakes were adequate, but a weird hyro-mecanical setup and rear axles snapped like carrots. \r\n\r\nRileys are one of the few cars I wouldn't want to own again unless it was some kind od special with the engine, gearbox steering and front end.
